The Department Head of Department: Mr Tom Kitson t.kitson@pimlicoacademy.org The Physical education department is thriving. We are a vigorous and motivated team who seek to deliver rich and innovative lessons that enthuse our students about physical education and equip them with the skills they need to be successful in our field. Students enjoy their Physical Education lessons and value the consistent feedback they are given. The impact of this is seen in the dramatic increase in GCSE A*-C from 9% in the final year of the predecessor school to 83% last year. We also won the Active Westminster Award 2011/12 for changing lives through sport and physical activity. All students have 100 minutes of Physical Education a week with the vast majority of students also attending extracurricular. The curriculum enables all pupils to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity. Students get to develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to perform successfully. When they are performing, they think about what they are doing, analyse the situation and make decisions. They also learn to reflect on their own and others’ performances and find ways to improve them. As a result, they develop the confidence to take part in different physical activities and learn about the value of healthy, active lifestyles. Discovering what they like to do, what their aptitudes are at school, and how and where to get involved in physical activity helps them make informed choices about lifelong physical activity. The PE Department also provides an extensive range of morning, lunch time and afterschool clubs. These include football; netball, fitness, dance, cheerleading, rowing, cricket, basketball, softball, American football, badminton, table tennis, parkour, dance, trampolining and darts. We are also involved in National, Inner London, Westminster, Camden, Chelsea and Kensington competitions in a variety of sports . A new member of the team would be expected to demonstrate a passion for the subject and the ability to teach high quality lessons across the key stages and range of abilities. They would also need to contribute to the department in terms of planning and improving schemes of work, extracurricular activities, coaching of teams and working with a positive approach towards our targets and developmental priorities.
