Post Library and Literacy Teaching Assistant Grade 5 (£14,728 – 16,149)
Responsible to Headteacher or designated member of staff Main Duties of the
Post
To work under the instruction/guidance of teaching/senior staff to undertake
work/support programmes: to enable access to the library, literacy and learning for
pupils. Work may be carried out in the English classroom and Library.
Support for Pupils

Supervise and provide support for pupils, including those with
special needs, ensuring their safety and access to
learning activities both during lesson time and at lunch times and
before and after school
 Assist pupils as they access resources available in the Library
 Establish constructive relationships with pupils and interact
with them according to individual needs
 Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils
 Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in
activities led by the teacher
 Set challenging and demanding expectations and promote selfesteem and independence
 Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress and
achievement under the guidance of the teacher
Support for Teachers

Establish and maintain the day-to-day organisation of the
Library
 Create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive
Library or classroom environment, and assist with display both in
the Library and on the English corridor
 Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support pupils to
achieve Literacy and learning goals
 Assist with the planning of learning activities
 Monitor pupils’ responses to learning activities and
accurately record achievement/progress, as directed
 Provide feedback to teachers on pupils’ achievement, progress,
problems etc.
 Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict
and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils
to take responsibility for their own behaviour
 Establish constructive relationships with parents/carers
 Provide clerical/admin support e g photocopying, typing,
filing, money, administer assessments etc.
Support for the Curriculum

Undertake structured and agreed learning
activities/teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to
pupil responses
 Undertake programmes linked to local and national
learning strategies e g literacy
 Support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop
pupils’ competence and independence in its use
 Prepare, maintain and use equipment/resources required to
meet the relevant learning activity and assist pupils in their use
Support for the School

Be aware of, and comply with, policies and procedures relating
to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and
data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
 Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils
have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
 Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
 Appreciate and support the role of other professionals
 Attend and participate in relevant meetings, as required
 Participate in training and other learning activities and
performance development, as required
 Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times
including before and after school and at lunchtime
 Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out
of school activities, as required, and take responsibility for a
group under the supervision of the teacher

Providing clerical and administrative support.
Establish and maintain the day-to-day organisation of the LRC, by:

Selecting new stock;

Accessioning stock;

Classifying stock;

Cataloguing stock;

Maintaining and repairing stock;

Preparing stock;

Monitoring stock.
Encourage and develop pupils reading habits through personal contact:

Sharing and guiding reading;

Listening to reading;

Facilitating independent/group/paired reading;

Facilitating ‘judging’ and ‘reviewing’ book groups.
Advise students and staff when:

Requiring stock;

Gathering information.
Support staff in class periods by:

Helping to supervise students;

Encouraging compliance with school rules;

Taking an active role in supporting structures and agreed
teaching and learning activities;

Suggesting and arranging activities where appropriate;

Referring behaviour concerns.
Encourage and develop the use of IT and AV resources in the Library by:

Reporting faults

Updating software/databases when appropriate.
Support students through contact with outside agencies. Continue:

Providing a careers advice section;

Meeting with other Library staff;

Taking part in Authority initiatives.
Present the Library as a pleasant and enjoyable place to be in, through
creating and maintaining a clean, purposeful, orderly, safe and productive
working environment that has:

Appropriate furniture;

Book displays;

Charts;

Wall displays.
Work within a pattern of working hours which allows access to the Library,
and supervision of the students at:

Breaktimes;

Lunchtimes:

After school.
Play an active role in ‘After School Club’ strategies by:

Supporting existing clubs;

Facilitating the start of any new clubs.
