Upper Elementary has much to celebrate! Last Saturday, Canterbury hosted its first ever, chess tournament and came away with the championship trophy for the grades 6th-12th division! Eight Canterbury students were among a total of seventy-six students competing in the various divisions. Third grader, Braxton Lee was the lone CES representative in the K-3rd grade division, while, fifth graders Emileigh Englebrecht, Christian Knight, and Brian Sackey all competed in the 4th /5th division. They each gained some great experience, had fun, and were thrilled to share in the victory of their fellow Cougars in the grades 6th -12th division. The combined scores of 6th grader, Maero Oyula (fourth place), 8th grader, Derrick Neal (6th place), and sixth graders, Nicholas Wayhs (10th place) and Louis Edwards (15th place) earned them the championship trophy! Special thanks are extended to the 6th grade mother/ daughter teams who ran the concession stand, Kimberly and Madeleine Brown, Martha and Maddie Beck, Nichole and Isis Howard, Natasha and Janna singleton, and Anna Fitzgerald. They raised $355 towards the cost of a special 6th grade project to be revealed later this spring! In addition, chess coach, Dennis Raveneau, stated, “This is one of the smoothest run tournaments I have been to.” He gave special praise to Art Gilchrist, Canterbury facilities manager, stating, “He’s phenomenal!” Congratulations Canterbury Chess Champions! “Crazy Sock Day” was also a great success. Students enjoyed coming to school wearing their crazy socks, but more importantly, CES students donated 500 pairs of socks for the needy! This is an outstanding example of the Canterbury community’s generous spirit! Well Done! Smiles, hugs, treats and Valentine greetings were in abundance on Thursday as students celebrated. Thanks to the parent organization for providing pizza and cupcakes for all. Mrs. Lawrence’s fourth grade art class enjoyed making handmade Valentines! Canterbury received a shout-out at the Dallas Youth Symphony Concert last Sunday afternoon. At the start of the concert before a full house, Mrs. Lage and Luke Durmon were asked to stand and were recognized for the excellent grant writing project done in the fifth grade language arts class. Luke’s persuasive letter was selected which resulted in the DYSO receiving a $200 grant! Also in attendance was Canterbury teacher, Mrs. Shepherd, there to support Luke, a member of the orchestra. This was great publicity for Canterbury but reflects what we already know. Canterbury is blessed with excellent, supportive teachers and talented students! This Saturday, 61 of those talented students will represent Canterbury at the district PSIA meet in Denton, Texas. Thirty-nine of those are upper elementary students competing in a wide range of events. Results from the meet will be posted next week. In preparation for the Prose Interpretation contest, students presented their readings during “lunch theatre” to the upper elementary student body! Please be reminded that there is no school on Monday in observance of Presidents’ Day and Winter Break! Also, Next Friday, February 22nd, the 6th grade is invited to attend the Middle School winter party in Bishops commons from 6:30 to 9:00. Finally, if you have not yet turned in your reenrollment contract, please do so as soon as possible. A reliable enrollment count is essential as administrators prepare teacher contracts, schedules, and programs for next year. Have a blessed weekend!
