DAY 2
Leaving for a tour in Absheron peninsula.
Yanar Dag (Azerbaijani: Yanar Dağ, translated as "Fire
Mountain"), is a visually stunning natural gas fire which
blazes continuously on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula
on the Caspian Sea near Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan,
which itself is known as the “land of fire.
The reasoning offered for the Yanar Dag fires is the result of
hydrocarbon gases emanating from below the earth’s
surface. Apart from Yanar Dag, the most famous site of such
a fire is the Zoroastrian Fire Temple near Baku, off the
Greater Caucasus, which is a religious site known as ateshgahs, meaning temples of fire. It has
also been inferred that such fires could be the cause for “thermal metamorphism”
This day will be spent primarily within Great Baku,
where You will be taken to main sites on Absheron
Peninsula Ateshgah - the Fire Worshippers' Temple
situated in the village of Surakhany. It was built on the

'Land of Fires'.
Lunch time.
After lunch break will be visited to well preserved ancient castles of Absheron Peninsula dated XII- XIII
AD and situated farther out from Absheron Peninsula.
There are several fine medieval castles - one is in Amirajan and Nardaran and two in Mardakyan apparently built for defense by the Shirvan’s Shahs in the 14-th century.
Qala is a village in Baku known for its rich historical past. Since 1988 the territory of the village has been
considered as the State Historical and Ethnographic Reserve, on territory of which there are 243
historical and architectural monuments (including mosques, baths, ovdans (water reservoirs), dwelling
houses etc.)
The name “Qala” means “fortress”, because earlier there was a citadel built in the 14th century;
unfortunately, only the remnants of the original structure and the adjacent Djuma Mosque have
survived.
In the outskirts of the village in one of the houses there is an ethnographic museum. The museum
collection includes copper kitchenware, pottery, tools and village utensils; the exposition also includes
the stones with epigraphic inscriptions and drawings from the entire Absheron Peninsula
