Dear Parents, Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! We hope you had a restful summer. We are now ready to begin the journey called MIDDLE SCHOOL MATHEMATICS. The curriculum for sixth grade mathematics focuses on: using ratios to describe proportional relationships involving numbers, geometry, measurement, probability, and adding and subtracting decimals and fractions. We believe these skills will help prepare your child for their future mathematical endeavors. Attendance in class is very important. Connected Math Program is very hands-on and students who are absent often are at a distinct disadvantage. If your child is absent from school, it is his or her responsibility to get and make up missed assignments. A student has a minimum of one day for each day’s absence to make up work missed without penalty. Homework provides valuable practice and reinforcement of concepts learned daily. Your child will be expected to complete and return any homework assigned. If your child is in Honors math they will be assigned homework throughout the week as necessary. If your child is in regular math they will have a connected math class as well as an enhanced math class to reinforce the concepts taught in the connected math class. The connected math class will assign homework on Monday and Wednesday. The enhanced math class will assign homework every Tuesday and Thursday. Student grades will be based on daily work/warm-ups/weekly quizzes (55%) & tests/projects/weekly interactive journal grades (40%) and homework (5%). Expect an academic report every three weeks. Progress reports are issued approximately three weeks into the reporting cycle. Report cards are issued every six weeks. Progress reports and report cards should be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to school. Your child will be required to bring their covered textbook and necessary supplies to class daily. Please work with your child to make sure they bring these items to class each day. A spiral will be used for Math class and it will be kept in the Math classroom. These spirals are a HUGE part of your child’s success in math class. We will be creating interactive notebooks. All work done in class, vocabulary and homework will be placed in the spiral daily. Your child will also be reflecting on their learning throughout the year. It is extremely important to stress the importance of keeping the spiral organized and up to date. It will be a wonderful tool for the students to use. Also, please keep in mind that there will be charges for damaged textbooks and lost textbooks will cost $52.87 to replace. You are always welcome to visit your child’s classroom. Remember to stop by the main office for a visitor pass when you arrive. If you need to contact a teacher, you may call the main office at 817-570-4060 to leave a message.
