Wednesday 25 March 2015 Your weekly update on the coatings industry Current number of subscribers: 44360 Dear reader, it all started with fire. Mankind got a much better chance to survive. These days we don’t have to run from sabre-toothed tigers, but some projects seem to be as ambitious as killing one of these creatures back in the days. To realize such projects, we need ideas as the one with the fire and we need the right surrounding and capacity for it. That is when innovations are born. Last week Asian Paints and Evonik announced investments to build new facilities. A good way for new products and innovations. The fire already burns for quite a long time and the sabre-toothed tigers are gone. Nowadays we fight with much more specific challenges, as for instance, how icsocyanates can be avoided in coatings. Sonja Schulte showed in her blog that there are even two breakthrough solutions to this problem. If you want to have a more detailed look at these solutions, attend the European Coatings CONGRESS in Nuremberg, where they will be presented! Enjoy reading. Exposure to free isocyante can result in adverse health effects such as respiratory diseases and severe allergic sensitization. Further isocyantes undergo irreversible side reactions with water which can be problematic for the application of isocyated based coatings such as PUR coatings in humid environments. There is also a need in many application for faster drying and hardness development that can achieved with current isocyante chemistry. However, typical approaches to faster dry times using isocyante chemistry usually lead to shorter formulation pot-life. Now two different isocyante-free approaches will be presented at the European Coatings CONGRESS. Both offer decoupling of pot life and curing speed while offering performance comparable to established systems. In my opinion, this is a real breakthrough in coatings technology! more Images in this issue courtesy of: Heiko Stahl, Uwe Bellhäuser, Pierre Brillot/Fotolia, Pixelio, Rainer Schmittchen/Fotolia, ag visuell/Fotolia, daboost/Fotolia, NicOlas Angevin/Fotolia, Crimson/Fotolia, coonlight/Fotolia If you enjoy reading "EC Newsletter", please tell your friends or colleagues about it.
