Wednesday, January 25, 2012 Edition #23 Cathedral High School Vision Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution in the Holy Cross tradition, will be the model for all high schools as she profoundly shapes the way students think, serve and lead. Dear Cathedral Parents, Our new look for the parent email will be sent to you next week. It will be more concise, will use many links, and will more easily allow you to focus on information that you want and need. We will not be using the red and black to indicate new or older documents, nor do we expect to have the clip art used previously. Congratulations to The Archdiocese of Indianapolis’s Mickey Lentz and a Leader in Catholic Education and “Champion of Change” For Helping to Prepare America WASHINGTON, DC – On Wednesday, January 25th, Annette “Mickey” Lentz will be one of the nine leaders in Catholic education from across the country who will be honored at the White House as Champions of Change for their service to their communities and our nation. These extraordinary individuals have made a significant impact on the students, families, and educators through Catholic schools and universities throughout America. Their innovative ideas and dedication to students and to the wider community, demonstrate the strong commitment to ensuring that every child has an opportunity for greatness. “We are thrilled to recognize these extraordinary Champions in Catholic Education at the White House. Each of these nine leaders embody the values of education, innovation and service through their stellar contributions to Catholic schools and the wider communities they serve,” said Alexia Kelley, Senior Policy Advisor White House Office of FaithBased and Neighborhood Partnerships. “These Champions, like their colleagues in Catholic education across the country, inspire all of us to build up our communities and our nation’s young people.” 3 The Champions of Change program was created as a part of President Obama’s Winning the Future initiative. Each week, a different sector is highlighted and groups of Champions, ranging from educators to entrepreneurs to community leaders, are recognized for the work they are doing to serve and strengthen their communities. Although we try to remind students of the dangers inherent in the Internet, it is hard to have them understand that bad things can happen to them on some of their favorite sites. This is an article sent to me by one of our parents on this topic. Recruit Yuri Wright expelled for Tweets ESPN.com news services Yuri Wright, the 40th-ranked player on the ESPNU 150 who is being sought by schools in the Big Ten, Pac-12, ACC, SEC and Big East, has put his scholarship hopes up in the air after being expelled from school for sexually graphic and racial inappropriate Twitter posts. Wright was expelled from Don Bosco Prep High School in Ramsey, N.J., on Wednesday, his high school coach, Greg Toal, confirmed to numerous media outlets. "He was expelled from the school for the things he had written on Twitter," Toal told ESPNNewYork.com. "It was pretty simple really, what he wrote were some graphic sex things. This is a Catholic school, things like that cannot happen. It was totally inappropriate." The reason, his coach said, was because of a series of tweets that began last July. Among the schools he is considering are Michigan, Rutgers, Notre Dame and Colorado. A number of outlets reported that Michigan has stopped recruiting him. National signing day is Feb. 1. Wright, a senior cornerback, was warned about social media consequences, according to Toal. Wright's account, which had more than 1,600 followers, has been deleted. "We told them about 10 or 15 times to get off (Twitter) and not to be involved in it, but there is always somebody who thinks he knows better." Toal told ESPNNewYork.com. "What he wrote was pretty bad, to be honest with you, I can't even say what he wrote. "He was told on numerous occasions not to be Twittering and there are consequences for his actions." Wright played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio earlier this month. Toal said that he has received calls from a few coaches regarding the situation, and believes Wright ultimately will weather the situation. "There have been schools that have called asking about it, but he'll be fine as far as colleges go." Toal told ESPNNewYork.com. "Some don't like it, but mostly people are just calling to make sure his head is straight." Here is the link to an incredible program that encourages safe, accountable, and positive choices in preparing to drive. This is a product out of Safe Kids and the Auto industry. It is set up for kids and parents to easily utilize while designing their own contracts and it educates while doing so. It also has the answers to commonly asked questions that many of us may be unaware of. (Most recent laws and requirements, etc.) The part that I like best is the collaborative approach to the contract and how it may be tailored to meet each family’s needs. Also, there are a few key changes to the process for next year that impact returning families: In the case of parents who are divorced or legally separated, Cathedral now requires each household to complete the process. Families now submit tax documentation directly to School & Student Services for Financial Aid (SSS) instead of to Cathedral. Families will receive tuition assistance awards at the time of re-enrollment (April). The deadline for returning students to apply for tuition assistance is February 15, 2012. Cathedral-Chatard Hockey Club Goes 2-1 in Canada: The Cathedral-Chatard Blues enjoyed a successful trip 'way up north' to Windsor, ON over the weekend of January 13th - 15th, by posting a winning record of 2-1 against teams from the Windsor area. The Friday night game proved to be a huge challenge, facing a really strong Belle River High School team just after completing our 6-1/2 hour charter bus ride to Belle River Ice Arena. The boys kept it close for the majority of two periods, eventually falling prey to rubbery legs and a very solid Belle River squad 7-0. But Saturday was a new day and offered a new challenge against another strong team, Brennan High School. Jordan Logan got the Blues on the board with a power play goal midway through the 2nd period to tie the game at one apiece, with Conor Sweeney and Dustin Rhodes both assisting on the goal. Brennan score two more goals to take a 3-1 lead before Nick Mpistolarides scored on a nifty pass from Rhodes to get the game closer at 3-2. Less than a minute later Sweeney sniped a shot from the far left outer circle to tie the game just before the 3rd period, with James Kirchgraber assisting on that power play goal. In the 3rd period the Blues got down 5-3 before the momentum started to swing. Jackson Eaton netted a power play goal from the slot on a play set up by pretty passes from Kirchgraber and Rhodes. Still down 5-4 with under two minutes left in the game, goaltender Bob Mooney was at his best in net, thwarting several shots by the boys from Brennan. Then Matthew Broyles tickled the twine on assists from Mpistolarides and Sam Cavender to tie the game with 1:25 left. With all of the momentum now on the side of the Blues, they were not to be denied, as James Kirchgraber scored the gamewinner on a pass from Mpistolarides with 0:29 left on the clock. The Blues hung on the remaining seconds with good defense to seal the victory 6-5. Sunday's early morning game at 7:30am saw the Blues taking on River Side HS for their 3rd and final game of the weekend. Conor Sweeney got the boys in Blue going early with a short-handed goal on assists by Broyles and Rhodes. With goaltender David McCloud patrolling the pipes and turning away shot after shot, the Blues notched their 2nd goal of the game with Kirchgraber scoring off a pass from Eaton. Down 3-2, the Blues tied the game later in the 2nd when JJ Freudenberg lifted a shot past the River Side netminder to tie the game. Logan and Cavender both contributed with assists on that goal. In the 3rd period the Blues buckled down and scored two more goals, one each by Mpistolarides and Rhodes to complete the scoring, with assists from Broyles and Andrew Christe on the first goal of the period, and Sweeney and Mpistolarides getting the assists on the final goal of the contest. The final score was 5-3 for the Blues, which made for a happy bus ride back to the States ~~~~~ Quote from Father Basil Moreau, founder of the Holy Cross Congregation. Meditation: Acts 22:3-16 The Conversion of St. Paul About noon a great light from the sky suddenly shone around me. (Acts 22:6) Have you taken a close look at your bathroom mirrors lately? The daily routine of brushing your teeth, washing your face, and combing your hair in front of a mirror can leave a build-up of water marks, leftover toothpaste, and hairspray, all obstructing your reflection and giving you a miry view of your appearance. But with just a little glass cleaner and some paper towels, you can wipe the grime away, enabling you to see your reflection clearly without any spots or buildup. In today’s first reading, the buildup that hindered Paul’s view about his life was removed when he met the Lord on the Damascus road. The revelation of Jesus—and of himself—moved Paul to turn away from his old way of thinking and embrace the church he had been persecuting. With a new clarity of vision and a new understanding of who God is and how he works, Paul turned his heart to Jesus, and immediately began preaching in the streets of Damascus. You can just imagine him telling people about his own experience of the Lord and urging them to turn to Jesus so that they too could come to see him as clearly as Paul had. What made Paul so passionate and so clear? His conversion, that’s what. The moment Jesus entered his life, everything changed! Paul knew what he was like before that day, and he saw how God had been at work transforming him from that point on. That one event was so powerful that the story is told three times in the Book of Acts alone—not to mention all the times Paul refers to it in his letters! Take some time today to write down the story of your own faith journey. Even if you didn’t have a dramatic “road to Damascus” experience, it is still important to write down how God has been at work, giving you a clearer vision of yourself and of his love. St. Paul himself shows us that a clear mind always leads to a pure heart. 26 “Praise you, Lord, for your love for me is strong and mighty! You are forever faithful to everyone who trusts in your name. May I always live to give you glory and honor!” Blessings, Principal Cathedral High School dworland@gocathedral.com 27
