Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution
in the Holy Cross tradition,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
Our new look for the parent email will be sent to you next
week. It will be more concise, will use many links, and will more
easily allow you to focus on information that you want and need.
We will not be using the red and black to indicate new or older
documents, nor do we expect to have the clip art used previously.
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school
in the Holy Cross tradition,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
I would like to congratulate the two people who will be in charge of Camp Cathedral for 2012. Tim Adams will be
the Director of Camp Cathedral and Jill Woerner will be the Assistant Director. Please watch carefully for the
tremendous course offerings that will be coming out soon.

Congratulations to our two outstanding vocalists who represented Cathedral at the Indiana Music Educators’ State
Convention in Fort Wayne last weekend. After rigorous auditions and months of rehearsals, Sarah Schultz and Zain
Santamaria along with our Choir Director Mrs. Holloway traveled to Fort Wayne last Friday morning. Sarah (soprano) and
Zain (tenor) performed with the All -State Honors Choir at the Embassy Theatre in Ft. Wayne at 5pm on Saturday. This is
the second consecutive year that Sarah and Zain have been selected to the All-State choir.
Congratulations to Jessica Peszek (’13), who won the all-around competition and uneven bars at the 2012 Circle of
Stars Gymnastics Invitational held this past weekend in Indianapolis. She also took second on beam and fifth on
floor.
Forget about the Super Bowl and any exciting, extravagant parties you may or may not have been invited to--Saturday at 7
p.m., Cathedral's match against Franklin Central will air on WTHR, channel 13. So, gather the family around the
television and watch Nick McCarty, Patrick Zunk, James Brokaw, and Evan Miller show us all how much they know.
It may not be the Super Bowl, and the commercials are all for Westfield Insurance, but it's still exciting!
Congratulations to The Archdiocese of Indianapolis’s Mickey Lentz and a Leader in Catholic Education and
“Champion of Change” For Helping to Prepare America
WASHINGTON, DC – On Wednesday, January 25th, Annette “Mickey” Lentz will be one of the nine leaders in Catholic
education from across the country who will be honored at the White House as Champions of Change for their service to
their communities and our nation. These extraordinary individuals have made a significant impact on the students,
families, and educators through Catholic schools and universities throughout America. Their innovative ideas and
dedication to students and to the wider community, demonstrate the strong commitment to ensuring that every child has
an opportunity for greatness.
“We are thrilled to recognize these extraordinary Champions in Catholic Education at the White House. Each of these
nine leaders embody the values of education, innovation and service through their stellar contributions to Catholic
schools and the wider communities they serve,” said Alexia Kelley, Senior Policy Advisor White House Office of FaithBased and Neighborhood Partnerships. “These Champions, like their colleagues in Catholic education across the
country, inspire all of us to build up our communities and our nation’s young people.”
3
The Champions of Change program was created as a part of President Obama’s Winning the Future initiative. Each
week, a different sector is highlighted and groups of Champions, ranging from educators to entrepreneurs to community
leaders, are recognized for the work they are doing to serve and strengthen their communities.
To watch this event live, visit www.whitehouse.gov/live at 1:30 pm ET January 25th.
Annette “Mickey” Lentz has served the archdiocese as a teacher, principal, and administrator in the Office of Catholic
Education for 50 years. Since 2009, she has served the Archdiocese of Indianapolis as chancellor. Mrs. Lentz has also
been the executive director of Catholic Education and Faith Formation, Associate Director for Schools, a principal and a
teacher for the Archdiocese. She created The Mother Theodore Catholic Academies – a consortium of schools to
strengthen Catholic education in the urban area. The Mother Theodore Catholic Academies are made up of four
Indianapolis center-city elementary schools. The Mother Theodore Catholic Academies are open to children of all
religions, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds. Our schools remain anchors to the neighborhoods they serve and are
committed to closing the achievement gap for low income and minority students. Mrs. Lentz is a tremendously capable
leader with a wealth of experience, excellent interpersonal skills and a great passion for serving the people of the
Archdiocese with integrity and compassion.

Announcements:
Easter Monday, April 9th, is incorrectly listed as a free day in the Blue Book. We will have a regular day of school
on that day. We are off for Good Friday, however, so that students, faculty, and staff may spend the day in their
parish church.
The next Math League is on February 14th.

National Catholic School's Week is next week (January 30-February 3rd). This year's theme is "Faith, Academics,
Service". Our schedule will be as follows:
Monday, Jan 30 - we will recognizing our students and focusing on our academic successes
Tuesday, Jan 31 - we will be celebrating liturgy and focusing on our Catholic faith
Wednesday, Feb 1 - Dr. Terry Nelson-Johnson will be speaking to the student body during the
school day on the importance of being a person of good character and maintaining Christian
values. Dr. Nelson provides a very distinct message that is delivered with sincerity and humor. Terry
was the faculty retreat speaker last summer and we found him to be entertaining and insightful. We
believe that your evening with Terry could be most beneficial to you as a parent of a teen. We hope that you will find
time in your schedule to be here with others as Terry shares an important message.
 He will also be speaking to the parents in the evening at 7:00 p.m. This day will be focused on our Catholic
community.
Thursday, Feb 2 - we will focus on service and will be collecting unused t-shirts for Timmy Global Health and they will
be taken to Guatemala on the summer mission trip. Collection boxes will be in the student entry and outside of Mrs.
Halstead's office in the SLC Commons.
Also on Thursday we will be having the Black History Dinner at 6:30pm in the SLC Commons.

Friday, Feb 3 - we will be honoring the faculty and staff. Dr. Tom Greer will be serving breakfast in the faculty lounge

Do your students like to Tweet or spend much time on Facebook? Although we try to remind students of the dangers
inherent in the Internet, it is hard to have them understand that bad things can happen to them on some of their favorite
sites. This is an article sent to me by one of our parents on this topic.
Recruit Yuri Wright expelled for Tweets
ESPN.com news services
Yuri Wright, the 40th-ranked player on the ESPNU 150 who is being sought by schools in the Big Ten, Pac-12,
ACC, SEC and Big East, has put his scholarship hopes up in the air after being expelled from school for
sexually graphic and racial inappropriate Twitter posts.
Wright was expelled from Don Bosco Prep High School in Ramsey, N.J., on Wednesday, his high school coach, Greg
Toal, confirmed to numerous media outlets.
"He was expelled from the school for the things he had written on Twitter," Toal told ESPNNewYork.com. "It was pretty
simple really, what he wrote were some graphic sex things. This is a Catholic school, things like that cannot happen. It
was totally inappropriate."
The reason, his coach said, was because of a series of tweets that began last July. Among the schools he is
considering are Michigan, Rutgers, Notre Dame and Colorado. A number of outlets reported that Michigan has stopped
recruiting him.
National signing day is Feb. 1.
Wright, a senior cornerback, was warned about social media consequences, according to Toal. Wright's account, which
had more than 1,600 followers, has been deleted.
"We told them about 10 or 15 times to get off (Twitter) and not to be involved in it, but there is always somebody who
thinks he knows better." Toal told ESPNNewYork.com. "What he wrote was pretty bad, to be honest with you, I can't
even say what he wrote.
"He was told on numerous occasions not to be Twittering and there are consequences for his actions."
Wright played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio earlier this month. Toal said that he has received calls
from a few coaches regarding the situation, and believes Wright ultimately will weather the situation.
"There have been schools that have called asking about it, but he'll be fine as far as colleges go." Toal told
ESPNNewYork.com. "Some don't like it, but mostly people are just calling to make sure his head is straight."
Information from ESPNNewYork.com's Robert Abruzzese is included in this report

Work It Out Parent Coaching L.L.C.
Here is the link to an incredible program that encourages safe, accountable, and positive choices in preparing to drive. This
is a product out of Safe Kids and the Auto industry. It is set up for kids and parents to easily utilize while designing their
own contracts and it educates while doing so. It also has the answers to commonly asked questions that many of us may be
unaware of. (Most recent laws and requirements, etc.)
The part that I like best is the collaborative approach to the contract and how it may be tailored to meet each family’s
needs. The program truly can save lives and it encourages positive choices and accountability.

Tuition Assistance for 2012-2013
Families with students returning for 10th, 11th and/or 12th grade next year and who are interested in applying for
tuition assistance for next year can begin to do so as of November 1 and should apply by
February 15, 2012. The Enrollment Management Office recently mailed information about this process
to families who received need-based tuition assistance during the current school year, but families can
learn more by visiting www.gocathedral.com/tuition.



Also, there are a few key changes to the process for next year that impact returning families:
In the case of parents who are divorced or legally separated, Cathedral now requires each household to complete
the process.
Families now submit tax documentation directly to School & Student Services for Financial Aid (SSS) instead of to
Cathedral.
Families will receive tuition assistance awards at the time of re-enrollment (April).
The deadline for returning students to apply for tuition assistance is February 15, 2012. Please contact Mr. Duane
Emery (demery@gocathedral.com) with questions.

Service Outreach News:
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
“If we live by the Spirit, let us walk by the Spirit.” Gal 5:25. Our path is called to serve others as we as our hearts imitate
Christ. By following the gentle and humble walk of humility and love which Christ has so readily made evident to us, God is
more revealed to us and we grow as merciful servants. Our love for others and caring actions center our attention upon our
Lord and his compassionate grace.
Senior Service Hours Senior service hours were due Dec 1. At this time, seniors should have their service hours
completed for all four years. Heartwarming experiences are being reflected in the senior’s service work which is especially
insightful.
Class Service Projects Class service projects become perfect opportunities for off-season sport groups and families. Our
freshmen will continue their support for the Catholic Charities Christmas Store on Wednesday, Jan 25 and Feb 2 at 3:30 by
starting to prepare for next year. On Saturday, Feb 11 at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen (10:30-1:30), Cathedral juniors will
prepare a warm and toasty lunch and dialogue with the homeless. Our next sophomore class spaghetti dinner will be on

in joining Mentoring Magic for the second semester, please contact Grace Waltz and Olivia Price, Co-Presidents with
questions or pick up forms from Mrs. Halstead. “We all know that one hundred years from now, the world may be a better
place because we chose to be important in the life and formation of a child.” This quote was paraphrased from Big Brothers
Big Sisters.

Peru Mission Trip Further details about our fourth Peru mission trip are available on the website. Our next meeting is

children’s home (Hogar) in Chaclacayo. It is an enthralling opportunity to enjoy a service, language and cultural adventure
in Lima and Cuzco, Peru. Dr. Tony Lazarra at the Hogar cares for more than seventy five children. For the application, click
here. You may review the website for the Hogar at www.villalapazfoundation.org. Please contact Mrs. Halstead right away
with your interest if I have not received your form. We are excited to continue this tradition in Peru.
Spring Break Mission Trip to South Carolina We will be having a meeting about the Spring Break
mission trip during Spring Break to Charleston, South Carolina on Thursday, Feb 9 at 6:15 in the SLC.
Form and fundraising information is available outside of Mrs. Halstead’s office. At this date we will have
a quick review of the trip from students who attended last year. This meeting is especially designed to
answer questions for parents about the trip.
Service Hours on Power School Normally, service hours may be viewed on Power School. They are current
for all hours received since the start of school. For the 2011-12 academic year, service hours for seniors are
due December 1, 2011 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2011-12, freshmen,
sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2012. The service hours for all students will be shown on their
third quarter report card. If the hours for this year are completed by April 1, hours earned after April 1 may be
credited to the next year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project basis as well. After Sep 1, hours
will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance. Click here to go directly to

Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each month.
The balance of 2011 and 2012 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community needs.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 2011-12 are due on March 1,
2012. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2011-2012 are due on December 1, 2011. Click here for
the 2011-12 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2011-12 Service Documentation form. Click here for the
Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.
Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not
accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not
accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

about picking up their spirit?

make mistakes or may not be performing up to their capabilities, pick them up with positive comments and
favorable support.
 We all have bad days in school and in our sports. Don't let those days and memories linger. Help your friends
and teammates move ahead to their next challenge!
For more information on the student-athlete go to www.ihsaa.org - Content property of Billy Shepherd Sports Inc.

Cathedral-Chatard Hockey Club Goes 2-1 in Canada: The Cathedral-Chatard Blues enjoyed a successful trip 'way
up north' to Windsor, ON over the weekend of January 13th - 15th, by posting a winning record of 2-1 against
teams from the Windsor area.
The Friday night game proved to be a huge challenge, facing a really strong Belle River High School team just after
completing our 6-1/2 hour charter bus ride to Belle River Ice Arena. The boys kept it close for the majority of two
periods, eventually falling prey to rubbery legs and a very solid Belle River squad 7-0.
But Saturday was a new day and offered a new challenge against another strong team, Brennan High School.
Jordan Logan got the Blues on the board with a power play goal midway through the 2nd period to tie the game at
one apiece, with Conor Sweeney and Dustin Rhodes both assisting on the goal. Brennan score two more goals
to take a 3-1 lead before Nick Mpistolarides scored on a nifty pass from Rhodes to get the game closer at 3-2.
Less than a minute later Sweeney sniped a shot from the far left outer circle to tie the game just before the 3rd
period, with James Kirchgraber assisting on that power play goal. In the 3rd period the Blues got down 5-3 before
the momentum started to swing. Jackson Eaton netted a power play goal from the slot on a play set up by pretty
passes from Kirchgraber and Rhodes. Still down 5-4 with under two minutes left in the game, goaltender Bob
Mooney was at his best in net, thwarting several shots by the boys from Brennan. Then Matthew Broyles tickled
the twine on assists from Mpistolarides and Sam Cavender to tie the game with 1:25 left. With all of the
momentum now on the side of the Blues, they were not to be denied, as James Kirchgraber scored the gamewinner on a pass from Mpistolarides with 0:29 left on the clock. The Blues hung on the remaining seconds with
good defense to seal the victory 6-5.
Sunday's early morning game at 7:30am saw the Blues taking on River Side HS for their 3rd and final game of the
weekend. Conor Sweeney got the boys in Blue going early with a short-handed goal on assists by Broyles and
Rhodes. With goaltender David McCloud patrolling the pipes and turning away shot after shot, the Blues notched
their 2nd goal of the game with Kirchgraber scoring off a pass from Eaton. Down 3-2, the Blues tied the game later
in the 2nd when JJ Freudenberg lifted a shot past the River Side netminder to tie the game. Logan and Cavender
both contributed with assists on that goal. In the 3rd period the Blues buckled down and scored two more goals,
one each by Mpistolarides and Rhodes to complete the scoring, with assists from Broyles and Andrew Christe on
the first goal of the period, and Sweeney and Mpistolarides getting the assists on the final goal of the contest. The
final score was 5-3 for the Blues, which made for a happy bus ride back to the States

Meditation: Acts 22:3-16
The Conversion of St. Paul
About noon a great light from the sky suddenly shone around me. (Acts 22:6)
Have you taken a close look at your bathroom mirrors lately? The daily routine of brushing your teeth, washing your face,
and combing your hair in front of a mirror can leave a build-up of water marks, leftover toothpaste, and hairspray, all
obstructing your reflection and giving you a miry view of your appearance. But with just a little glass cleaner and some paper
towels, you can wipe the grime away, enabling you to see your reflection clearly without any spots or buildup.
In today’s first reading, the buildup that hindered Paul’s view about his life was removed when he met the Lord on the
Damascus road. The revelation of Jesus—and of himself—moved Paul to turn away from his old way of thinking and
embrace the church he had been persecuting. With a new clarity of vision and a new understanding of who God is and how
he works, Paul turned his heart to Jesus, and immediately began preaching in the streets of Damascus. You can just
imagine him telling people about his own experience of the Lord and urging them to turn to Jesus so that they too could
come to see him as clearly as Paul had.
What made Paul so passionate and so clear? His conversion, that’s what. The moment Jesus entered his life, everything
changed! Paul knew what he was like before that day, and he saw how God had been at work transforming him from that
point on. That one event was so powerful that the story is told three times in the Book of Acts alone—not to mention all the
times Paul refers to it in his letters!
Take some time today to write down the story of your own faith journey. Even if you didn’t have a dramatic “road to
Damascus” experience, it is still important to write down how God has been at work, giving you a clearer vision of yourself
and of his love. St. Paul himself shows us that a clear mind always leads to a pure heart.

“Praise you, Lord, for your love for me is strong and mighty! You are forever faithful to everyone who trusts in your name.
May I always live to give you glory and honor!”
Blessings,
