Grade 9 School Leaving Celebrations 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians:
The date for the upcoming Grade 9 School Leaving Ceremony is Friday, May 29th. We
would like to provide parents/guardians with some information about the evening.
Grade 9 students can purchase up to 2 tickets for parents/guardians. Each ticket costs
$5.00 and they will go on sale May 20th. Students can bring their money to the
homeroom teacher. They will get their tickets a day or two before the ceremony.
Allowances will be made for blended families. There are 235 grade 9 students leaving
MDJH and moving on to high school next year. Hence, a large number of people are
expected at the school on the 29th. Should there be extra tickets, they will be made
available on Wednesday, May 27th. We encourage grade 9 students to have their ticket(s)
purchased prior to the 27th.
Appropriate Attire
Dressy casual is appropriate for students. We do not want this evening to be a formal
affair, but instead special and fun. So please, don’t purchase expensive formal gowns or
suits. A casual dress or skirt for girls and casual pants/shirt for guys would be perfect.
Important Reminder
Since we are so close to end of the school year, every day of classes is important. With
that in mind, students should NOT be out of class on May 29th. If an appointment
causes someone to leave a little early, a note should be provided to the homeroom
teacher. This should not be an issue since students are dismissed by 2:30 PM.
For parents, the evening will consist of two parts:
(1) Ceremony 7:00 – 8:15 P.M.
This part of the evening is attended by students and parents/guardians. The ceremony
will include a parade of Grade 9 students, songs, and a valedictory address. All students
should be at the school by 6:30 p.m. Parents who drop off their sons/daughters early
are welcome to find a seat in the gym.
(2) Dance 9:30 – 11:00 P.M.
Attended by students. Parents/guardians will leave after the reception and arrange to pick
up their son/daughter promptly at 11:00 p.m. Please note: any student who leaves the
dance early will need to sign out and will not be permitted to return. Students who leave
early are also asked to have a permission form signed by a parent.

(3) Reception 8:15 – 9:30 P.M.
After the ceremony, refreshments will be served by Grade 7/8 parent volunteers in the
cafeteria. Parents of Grade 9 students will be asked to contribute hors d’oeuvres, cookies,
etc… on the day of the celebrations. No sandwiches please, as we will be ordering
sandwich trays. If you can provide something for the evening please indicate the item you
would like to bring and email Kathy Pollett at kpollett@nf.sympatico.ca or have your
son/daughter return the bottom of this letter to the office. It is important that you reply
as soon as possible as the parent volunteers need to determine where there may be
shortages. Please include your email address as someone may need to contact you early
in the week of May 29th. On the night of the ceremony, someone will collect your food item
at the door or you can drop it off at the office on the 29th prior to 3:30 PM.
We remind parents/guardians that we have students with allergies. So PLEASE do
NOT send any of the following foods:
o NUTS: walnuts, almonds, pecans, cashews, peanuts, etc….
o ALL FISH: cod, shrimp rings, crab, lobster, etc.
o KIWI

We are planning a slide show and we want everyone to be included so please send in a
baby picture as soon as possible to Susan O’Brien at SusanO’Brien@nlesd.ca
Please send the picture as a jpeg by May 20th.
