T U E S D A Y pm W E D N E S D A Y am Activity Welcome message from the Dean and Director of Engineering Student Services (ESS) and student/advisor introductions. Presentation about resources available through Engineering Student Services. Objective Create a welcoming environment that builds a sense of community among the incoming class and connects them with the SOE personnel. General presentation on course requirements, degree curriculums and specializations, pre-requisites, and making academic progress in the SOE. Introduce participants to the degree programs, curriculum sheets and checklist, academic choices and research areas within the departments. Discussion about moving from HS to university expectations (advisement, participation, ownership, personal responsibilities, faculty, etc.) Construct a foundation on transitioning/understanding the need for selfreliability in the student’s academic and personal goals. Activity One-on-one academic advisement Objective Through one-on-one advisement, develop individualized academic plans with the students and help them interpret the requirements to develop a sound class schedule. Learning Outcome These one-on-one interactions will enable students to receive specialized academic guidance to make wellreasoned and well-informed academic choices. Students will also become familiar with the process of developing a schedule of classes. Course registration at Engineering Computer Lab Guide students through the computer registration process. Students will be able to identify how to add/drop classes online. Ensure every participant will learn first-hand about the resources and support needed to succeed at UNM as an Engineering or Computer Science Student. Learning Outcome New Students will become familiar with the purpose of attending college, being part of an academic community and begin to relate it to their educational goals. Students will become familiarized with the resources available through ESS that include specialized tutoring, career/professional development workshops, networking opportunities with technical industries, professional organizations, internship opportunities, etc. Students will be able to recognize the importance of technical courses and foundation courses needed to make progress in order to enter the engineering or computer science departments; know how to pursue opportunities within the departments; and, differentiate among the Dean’s List, Probation, Academic Improvement Plan (AIP), and Academic Warning. Students will know where to go to get help for any issues encountered or questions they have about their academic career at UNM – knowing that in certain cases, they may need to reach out to services that are beyond the scope of ESS and the SOE.
