FACULTY ORIENTATION PLAN I. II. III. IV. Guidelines for Orientation Process 1. New full time faculty are expected to participate in the full formal orientation. 2. Adjunct faculty and teaching assistants/associates are expected to participate in the annual orientation meeting and are invited to participate in other selected meetings. 3. New faculty are encouraged to be actively involved in setting agendas for ongoing personal orientation activities with their mentors after the initial new faculty orientation meeting. 4. New faculty are encouraged to take part in planned orientation programs and workshops sponsored by the Library, Sponsored Research, Distance Education, and other University divisions. Initial New Faculty Orientation Period 1. Approximately one month before faculty arrive for fall semester, a letter of invitation and agenda for the new faculty orientation meeting will be mailed out to new faculty. This orientation will be held either in one or two periods before classes begin. 2. Faculty will be asked to review the Faculty Handbook on-line, including Faculty Bylaws, committee structures, etc.; Student Handbooks; 1995 Self-Study Report; and any other materials deemed important for understanding the College and University before the first Faculty Assembly meeting. 3. Full-time faculty will meet with administrators as appropriate. 4. A tour of the facilities will be provided, and an orientation scheduled for major divisions, such as the Library, will be set up with the faculty member. 5. The University’s new faculty orientation date will be considered in the planning for the College activities so that the new faculty members may attend. Continuing New Faculty Orientation during First Semester 1. Meetings once or more a month with the Dean or other relevant person will be planned for the first two months of the semester. These meetings will be devoted to the study of nursing within the context of the FAU philosophy and the questions that the new faculty member brings to the meetings, including curriculum, advisement, promotion and tenure, centers, research, teaching in a caring-based curriculum, service, university governance, graduate scholarly outcome options of students and faculty roles, doctoral program expectations, etc. 2. Faculty are expected to advise students in the particular program or programs they will be teaching in. New faculty will be mentored in advisement by an assigned experienced faculty member. 3. New faculty participate on a College of Nursing Committee. Faculty Mentor 1. 1. A faculty member will be asked to be the mentor for the new faculty member for the first year. An informal mentorship also develops with other faculty member(s) over time. Generally, this is based on common interests and teaching responsibilities.
