Key Function
To plan and undertake heritage surveys to protect our native title clients’ heritage, and to liaise
regularly with and seek instruction from native title groups on the conduct of such surveys.
Position Responsibilities
Reports/Surveys













Undertake all heritage survey arrangements as directed by Heritage Services Manager
Lead fieldwork and/or assist with fieldwork logistics as required.
Liaise with Government and Non-Government proponents and developers to negotiate
the conduct of cultural heritage surveys
Liaise with appropriate Traditional Owner representatives regarding survey information
and logistics
Assemble historical data from DAA and other archives relating survey areas
Interpret and evaluate historical data relating to the survey area and native title
claimants of that area.
Prepare all documents necessary to conduct heritage surveys
Prepare regular updates for claims on survey activity
Undertake proof-reading of reports and other documents as required
Ensure Heritage reports are prepared in a timely, culturally appropriate and costeffective manner
Heritage survey budget information and other relevant documentation is produced and
issued in a timely and cost effective manner
Ensure liaison occurs promptly, effectively and in a culturally appropriate manner
Prepare ad hoc information and presentations as requested regarding heritage matters
Budgets & Funding



Liaise with relevant staff in relation to heritage survey and monitoring
Ensure payment forms are filled in by survey participants and processed in a timely
manner
Ensure Finance receive payment forms promptly
Meetings




Attend general meetings and working group meetings in relation to relevant surveys
Attend internal claim team meetings
Liaise with lawyers where required in relation to heritage activity
Attendance at all relevant meetings
Advice

Provide advice to the Snr Heritage Advisor and Community Parternships Manager
regarding heritage activity
Liaison




Liaise where appropriate to ensure co-operative relationships and to encourage good
heritage practices.
Liaise with relevant YMAC staff and native title working groups regarding heritage
work.
Liaise with Community Liaison Officers (CLO) regarding survey preparation.

Maintain communication with Media and Communications staff in regard to publicly
accessible information and claim updates.

 Take care of and responsibility for any physical resources during employment with
YMAC including IT, vehicles, equipment and related items

 Ensure confidentiality, respect and professionalism is maintained in all business
dealings during employment at YMAC

Selection Criteria
Qualifications




Dual Tertiary Qualifications in Archaeology and Anthropology will be highly regarded.
Tertiary qualification in Archaeology or Anthropology required.
Heritage Survey experience required.
A current Australian driver’s licence.
Skills




Must have good organisational and time management skills, with proven capacity to
work autonomously, determine priorities and deal with competing demands within
limited time frames is a strong requirement of this position
Must have the ability to exercise sound judgement, initiative and an innovative approach
to problem solving
Ability to work under pressure in an often challenging environment
Personal drive, integrity and excellent communication skills
Experience



Ability to lead heritage survey teams and undertake heritage surveys independently if
required.
Ability to work directly with communities, and to communicate clearly and effectively.
Ability to work directly with Indigenous people in a culturally appropriate manner

Ability to work with Government and non-government organisations in exploration and
resource extraction, infrastructure and other development contexts
Knowledge




Understanding of Indigenous issues, particularly those to do with heritage and other land
matters is highly desirable.
Native Title and Aboriginal Heritage legislation
Occupational Health & Safety legislation and requirements
Organisational Policies and Procedures
The position will require regular travel, often to remote areas. Experience in remote area
travel, and/or willingness to do so is also required.
