National Forensic League
The purpose of this organization is to promote debate, oratory, public speaking, and interpretation
of literature by encouraging a spirit of fellowship and by conferring upon deserving candidates a
worthy badge of distinction. As an organization, the National Forensic League embraces diversity,
interconnection, and visionary leadership. It empowers students to become effective
communicators, ethical individuals, critical thinkers, and leaders in a democratic society.
The National Forensic League Honor Society promotes secondary school speech and debate
activities and interscholastic competition as a means to develop a student’s lifelong skills and
values, as well as the public’s awareness of the value of speech, debate, and communication
education.
Membership is conferred upon members achieving 25 points. Advanced degrees are conferred
upon members for special attainments, as follows:
Degree of Honor. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 75 points

Degree of Distinction. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 250 points
Degree of Special Distinction. . . . . . . . . .500 points
Degree of Superior Distinction. . . . . . . . .750 points
Degree of Outstanding Distinction.. . . . 1000 points
Degree of Premier Distinction.. . . . . . . .1500 points
Potomac Falls debaters must achieve a Degree of Special Distinction over the course of their
debate careers to earn the right to wear the NFL Honor Cord at graduation. Points are combined
for debate and forensics, are cumulative and may be added retroactively. All NFL members may
have the NFL insignia put on their class rings.
Participation is strictly voluntary. There is a one-time $20.00 registration fee that includes
membership in the NFL Alumni Association after graduation from high school.
