General call for posters and prints for:
Wood Type, Evolved: Experimental Letterpress & Relief Printing in the 21st
Century

Wood Type, Evolved defines a global, burgeoning mode of activity in which
contemporary artists are producing artwork through the development of new
experimental printing techniques based on traditional letterpress materials—
particularly wood type.
Why wood type, why now? While the widespread industrial production of wood
type dates from 1827 into the late 1970s, a recent resurgence in letterpress printing
combined with the increasing availability of commercially “obsolete” production
equipment has created room for dialogue and opportunity. This has fueled
experimentation in artist studios, presses and print shops around the world.
Through the display of artwork and examples of printing surfaces, Wood Type,
Evolved will also reveal how laser cut, hand engraved, acrylic and otherwise
manipulated types are becoming ways to engage a traditional style exemplified by
wood type through contemporary fabrication techniques.

The Center for Book and Paper Arts gallery is pleased to announce its fall 2011
show, “Wood Type, Evolved: Experimental Letterpress and Relief Printing in the 21st
Century” to be held September 8 through December 10. The curators of this show
would like to invite you to exhibit any work that you’ve done, directly relating to
this subject in the last 11 years.
Please submit an intent to participate to April Sheridan at asheridan@colum.edu as
soon as possible, at which time we will send you an artwork loan agreement form to
fill out.

All flat work will be hung on the wall; feel free to submit framed or unframed prints.
Please note if your work is for sale. A 30% commission is taken by the gallery.

Images of your submitted work might be included in a catalog documenting the
show’s contributors, their work, and will include an essay by Nick Sherman.
All art must be received by July 22, 2011. Artwork may be dropped off or shipped to
the Center in sturdy, reinforced, and reusable cartons with appropriate protection
and must include return shipping.
An opening reception for the artists and public will be held on Friday, September 8,
2011 from 5—8 p.m.
At the end of the exhibit all work will be repackaged and shipped back to you.
