David and Jade Walsh Graduate Fellowship in Global Studies
The David and Jade Walsh Graduate Fellowship in Global Studies will be awarded to one outstanding
graduate student with a strong record of academic excellence. Students completing a thesis or
dissertation project focused on internationally-oriented topics related to energy security and/or
international security with consideration for projects also focusing on international aspects of
environment and natural resources/development are eligible. Priority will be given to those who
demonstrate an interdisciplinary and international breadth in his/her course of study and completing a
project that focuses on a natural resource challenge faced by society. Candidates are considered based
on the extent to which the (s)he demonstrated the commitment and potential to make a significant
contribution to his or her field via the international research project that (s)he is completing. This
purpose of this graduate fellowship is to promote interdisciplinary academic and research programs in
a broad range of disciplines across UW. One graduate student will be eligible for the $10,000 award
for one semester for Spring 2015 to cover tuition, fees, travel expenses, and other expenses related to
the student’s research. Application deadline is September 15, 2014. Questions can be addressed to

Eligibility and Criteria:









Cumulative GPA at time of application: 3.50
All applicants must be degree-seeking students during the semester the fellowship is awarded.
Applicants must have at least 18 hours of directed coursework completed or in progress and be
enrolled as a UW student at the time of application.
UW students from any college involved in a research project with significant focus on energy
security/international security or environment and natural resources/development may apply.
Students must outline their research project design, explain the project’s potential for academic
excellence, and explain the significant contribution the research project makes to the international
security/energy-related and/or environment and natural resources /development knowledge base
and how it addresses critical energy and natural resource challenges faced by society.
Demonstrated financial need may also be considered.
Applicants will have their initial written applications screened; select students may be chosen for
interviews. Interviews, if necessary, will determine final awardees.
Faculty may nominate students for this award; nominated students will choose whether to
complete the application process.
The fellowship recipient will be asked to engage in public programming which explains his/her
research to the UW community, the state of Wyoming, and/or within their professional field of
study. A one-page report is due to the Center for Global Studies at the end of the semester in which
the award is given.
Application requirements:
1. Completion and submission of this Center for Global Studies Graduate Fellowship
application form.
2. A one-page essay describing the research project underway, including a brief abstract or
executive summary of your research project, and specific status of the project including
anticipated date of completion.
3. A one-page essay describing your academic and professional goals and how they will be
impacted by your research project, including how the thesis/dissertation research has put you
in a position to impact the future of your field of study. In this essay, please explain how your
research project has positioned you to further your knowledge of your academic field and how
it addresses a critical energy/sustainability of natural resources challenge faced by society.
4. A copy of an unofficial transcript.
5. A proposed set of activities that will be pursued to help disseminate your research results to
the UW community, the state of Wyoming, or your professional field of study.
6. One recommendation letter from your academic advisor or a faculty member familiar with the
specifics of your research project. This letter should address specifically your ability to finish
this project in the proposed semester of funding. It should not be a generic letter written for
general recommendation purposes. Faculty should be asked to email their letters directly to
intstudy.uw@uwyo.edu, separately from your application to be received by the respective
deadline.
7. A one-page report is due to the Center for Global Studies at the end of the semester in which the
award is given. All grant recipients will be asked to engage in public programming which
explains the internship/research results to the UW community, the state of Wyoming, or within
your professional field of study.
