Student V.I.P.
By: Breanna Hose
What Is Black History Month?
I bet your wondering “What’s
Black History month? Black history
is about bringing awareness to
African Americans’ contributions
to our society. Carter G. Woodson
was the man who helped to
create black history month. Black
history week started in 1926 then it
changed to black history month.
Why Is February Black History
Month?
Black history month is in February
because Abraham Lincoln and
Frederick Douglas both celebrate
their birthdays this month. Both of
these men greatly influenced the
African American Population.
By: Kinsey Shawyer
Have you ever been a V.I.P.? If not, you can read this to find out how
you can earn this awesome award. I interviewed Mrs. Folk about
V.I.P. and this is how the whole thing went. I asked her:
“What does V.I.P. mean to you?”
“Selecting students with outstanding behavior.”
“If you were a student and you got to be V.I.P., how would you
react?”
“I would be so excited and eager to share the news with others.”
“Is there any other special treat you could do for rewarding
students for V.I.P.?”
“No, I don’t think so because it’s already an honor to be nominated.”
“How do you think students feel about V.I.P.?”
“I would hope every student would work to being elected it would
give kids something to reach for.”
How you can earn this awesome reward is being the best you can be
for the character trait of the month like, this month’s was
responsibility. Next month’s is empathy, which means being able to
see someone else’s point of view. I really hope you will do your best
to earn this awesome prize for February.
Correction: In the December issue of The Northside Eagle News, Ms. Leard was incorrectly quoted. When asked,
“What do you think should change (about the show choir concert)? Her actual response was, “I don’t think you should
change anything. I really liked it; you guys did a great job.
The new movie Tintin is out and it is even better than
the book!
Teacher of the month
By: Caden Rose
If you were wondering who the last
teacher of the month was it was Mrs.
Karkan! I have a new one for you and you
will never get it. Unless you are in his/her
class, maybe! Here are some questions I
gave him/her.
Tintin is in 3-D, and it is an adventure movie.
It is full of excitement and it will get your adrenaline
pumping. So I strongly suggest you go see… TINTIN!

January Weather
By Melanie Boschen
This winter has had some awfully strange weather.
It keeps going from warm to cold and back again.
Here is a chart of average low and high
temperatures around MD.
Place in MD
Low and High
Average
Baltimore
24 and 41 ̊F
Hagerstown
22 and 37 ̊F
Frederick
22 and 39 ̊F
I think that the weather this winter is going to
cause a very hot summer because of the
temperature changes. Some of us just want some
snow but we have only had it once! Even some of
us play outside in this warm weather. I am going to
just be grateful for the snow we got!
Compare these images of snow fall:
The deep snow was two years ago and the shallow
snow was this year. We had lots and lots of snow
one year and very little snow this year.

Love Day!
By: Alex Gregory
I sat down with my teacher, Mr. Vreeland
and I asked him about Valentine’s Day.
Do you like Valentine’s Day? Why or Why
not?
I like it because I get to go out with my wife
and eat dinner together, and talk.
Weather Poem
This month’s poem is by Najia in
Mrs. Durham’s classroom.
Rainbows
I like rainbows.
They stretch across the sky.
Their colors are light and bright.
You cannot see them at night.
But I can see them in my sight.
Do you think it’s important? Why or Why
not?
Yes, because it’s a time when you can tell
people that their special and it’s a time when I
can tell my wife she is special!!!!
Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? Why or
Why not?
I do celebrate it because it’s a time when I can
tell my wife I love her.

I asked Najia a few questions about her poem. The
first one I asked was: Why do you think I picked your
poem? She thought it was because of how the image
was an optical illusion. It really was because I liked
the way she used rhyming words and the descriptive
language. The next thing I asked her was: Why did
you write this? She said, “I really liked rainbows when
I was little.” The last question I asked was: How do
you feel about rainbows? She said, “I always thought
it was a symbol of good luck.”
I am very proud of Najia’s work and effort to
make this poem!
Eat Healthy
By Joseline
I asked a few questions to a student about being healthy!
Question 1: What are your favorite foods and why?
Here is Jasmines response: My favorite foods are lasagna,
because it’s healthy but just a certain kind, and it has meat
inside of it. And also ice cream!
Question 2: Do you think that eating healthy will make
you strong or weak?
Here is Jasmines response: Strong because eating healthy will
give you energy
Step Team
This wonderful group of
dancers practices every
Thursday in Mrs. Karkan’s
room. Some of these
dancers include Crystal
Martinez and Karly
Bookheimer from the
morning announcements.
Question 3: Do you know a healthy diet plan?
Jasmine said: Drink water and no soda and eat healthy things.
Here are some healthy tips courtesy of the website
http://www.fitness.gov/10tips.htm :
Snack smart.
Snacks are a great way to refuel. Choose snacks from different
food groups - a glass of low-fat milk and a few graham crackers,
an apple or celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins, or some
dry cereal. If you eat smart at other meals, cookies, chips and
candy are OK for occasional snacking.
Start your day with breakfast.
Breakfast fills your "empty tank" to get you going after a long
night without food. And it can help you do better in school. Easy
to prepare breakfasts include cold cereal with fruit and low-fat
milk, whole-wheat toast with peanut butter, yogurt with fruit,
whole-grain waffles or even last night's pizza
If you can
work for love
then we
should work
all day.

Recess
By: Alex Gregory
I interviewed Kaylee Schultz. in Ms.
Haren’s class about if we need less or
more recess, and I also interviewed
Donye M. in Ms. Durham’s class.
Black History Month Word Search
If you finish this puzzle, give it to Mrs. Folk by February 15
and you will be entered into a drawing to win a prize!
I asked Kaylee:
Do you feel we need less recess? Why
or Why Not?
No, because it’s time when we can
hang out with our friends and talk.
How much time should we have for
recess? Why?
20 minutes because sometimes when I
go outside it is really cold and I am
used to being warm.
Anything else?
I have been thinking about this for a
while, since 3rd grade actually.
What is your favorite????
Do you feel we need less recess? Why?
By: Karly Bookheimer
Donye replied “Yes, because you get
more time to learn and be with my
teacher.”
Why do you feel that way?
Every month you will be seeing an article about something that is
your favorite! This month is your favorite subject! So I will
interview 3 people about their favorite subject.
What is your favorite subject?
Because it allows me to have a good
education, and I think it’s fun!
“Reading because it is the quietest time of the day!” said Kinsey.
How much time should we have for
recess?
“Reading, because I love to read!” said Melanie.
Only 10 minutes because it can be very
cold.
“Science because you get to see things explode!” said Breanna.
Stay tuned for next month!

New Year
New Years is a good time to make resolutions so you
can improve and do even better the next year. But
surprisingly, not a lot of kids at our school made New
Years resolutions this year. I asked many kids what
their resolutions were and got few. My resolution is
to recycle more and eat healthier. Here are some
other resolutions:

Valentine’s Day Parties
By: Helena Johnson
Has anyone heard of Valentine’s Day? Well if you haven’t I will give you a hint, it is the one with the hearts and
kisses. Do you know if any of your teachers are having a Valentine’s party?
I interviewed Mr.Vreeland and asked him the question: Are you planning on having a Valentine’s Day party and he
said “yes”.
I interviewed Melanie and asked her: What do you think the party is going to be about? She said about giving
cards and having fun.

Movie of the Month
By: Crystal Martinez
This month the movie of the month is Charlie Brown Be My Valentine.
It’s Valentine’s Day and Charlie Brown is hoping on his dream to get at
least one valentine. Yet the rest of the gang has dreams to. Linus is trying
to get just the right valentines gift for his teacher Miss Othmar, while Sally
thinks that the gift is for her! Will Charlie Brown get a Valentine? Will
Linus get just the right gift for Miss Othmar? What will happen to Sally?
To find out you are going to have to watch the movie!
I interviewed Karly Bookheimer about the movie.
Did you like the movie? Why? Yes, it was really funny and it just gets me
into the valentines feeling.
If you were able to change it, what would you change? Why? I
wouldn’t change anything because it was just really funny and a good
movie.
What three words would you describe this movie? Why? I would
describe it as funny, entertaining and obsessive. It is funny because
Snoopy is crazy. It is entertaining because it made me laugh a lot. It is
obsessive because you just want to watch over and over and over!
From a 1-10 what would you rate the movie?
an 9. So that is a pretty good movie!
I would rate this movie
I, Crystal Martinez have seen the movie too. This is what I thought of it:
Did you like the movie? Why? Yes, it was funny and like Karly I just
wanted to make some Valentine’s Day cards after it.
WHERE’S WALDO???
By Hannah Powell
If you were able to change it, what would you change? Why? I would
change the end by making it a little happier (it already is happy). I think
that it could be happier, and I think that would make the movie better.
What three words would you describe this movie? Why? I would
describe it as funny, dramatic and entertaining. Snoopy made it funny and
entertaining and it was dramatic with all the Valentine’s Day things.
From a 1-10 what would you rate the movie?
an 8.
I would rate this movie
What do you rate this movie? If you’re thinking “I don’t know I haven’t
seen the movie”. Then watch the movie!
