SWAROVSKI CO.
A brief history on the crystals used in all of my designs.
History
Daniel Swarovski (1862, northern Bohemia – 1956, Wattens) was born to a glass cutter in
the Austrian monarchy. In 1892 he patented an electric cutting machine that facilitated
the production of lead crystal glass jewelry.
In 1895 Swarovski, financier Armand Kosman and Franz Weis founded the Swarovski Company,
originally known as A. Kosman, Daniel Swarovski & Co, which was later shortened to K.S. &
Co. The company established a crystal-cutting factory in Wattens, Tyrol, to take
advantage of local hydroelectricity for the energy-intensive grinding processes, which
Daniel Swarovski had patented. For a complete history of Swarovski, please go to
http://www.swarovski.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/SCO-Web_US-Site/en_US//USD/SPAG_TheStory-ViewPage.
Products
The Swarovski Crystal range includes crystal sculptures and miniatures, jewelry and
couture, home decor and chandeliers.
All sculptures are marked with a logo. The original Swarovski logo was an edelweiss
flower,
but was replaced with the current swan logo in 1988.
In order to create a crystal that allows light to refract in a rainbow spectrum,
Swarovski coats some of its crystals with special metallic chemical coatings. Aurora
Borealis, or "AB", is one of the most popular coatings, and gives the surface a rainbow
oil slick appearance. Each bead has a lead crystal core with 4 layers of a pearlized
color coating.
Other coatings include Crystal Transmission, Volcano, Aurum, and Dorado. Coatings may be
applied to only part of an object; others are coated twice, and thus are designated AB
2X, Dorado 2X etc.
Some color might be Slightly Different due to the light source while the photo is being
taken.
In 2004 Swarovski released Xilion, a new copyrighted cut designed to optimize the
brilliance of Roses (crystal components with flat backs) and Chatom’s (diamond cut).
The Swarovski Group also includes Tyro lit (makers of abrasive and cutting tools);
Swareflex (reflective and luminous road markings); Signity (synthetic and natural
gemstones); and Swarovski Optic (optical instruments such as binoculars and riflescopes).
The company runs a crystal-themed indoor theme park, Swarovski Kristallwelten (Crystal
Worlds) at its original Wattens site (near Innsbruck, Tyrol, Austria).
Active-Crystals
In 2007 Swarovski formed a partnership with electronics giant Philips to produce the
"Active-Crystals" consumer electronics range. This includes four USB Memory keys and four
in-ear headphones.
In 2008 they included Bluetooth wireless earpieces for the brand, all with some form of
Swarovski crystal on them as decoration.
Crystallized - Swarovski Elements
Swarovski Crystal Beads
The company also sells
beads and rhinestones for use by manufacturers, artists and consumers in
their designs.
In 2007, Swarovski also launched the product brand website “crystallized.com”, which
provides information for designers and manufacturers in the worlds of fashion, jewelry,
accessories and interiors.
Crystallized - Swarovski Elements is the new product brand for Swarovski crystals in a
variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Products that are labeled with this brand guarantee
the originality of Swarovski crystals used in creations of international fashion houses
and designers.
In popular culture
In 2004, Swarovski created the 9-foot diameter, 550-pound star that tops the Rockefeller
Center Christmas tree in New York City for the first of five consecutive years.
Swarovski was also a sponsor for
"standing model" of the chandelier
window is also visible later in the
which would have been the case in
The Phantom of the Opera (2004 film), in which the
was composed of Swarovski crystals. A Swarovski shop
film. However instead of using the edelweiss flower,
the era the film was set, the current swan logo was
used instead.

Swarovski offers a wide range of colors and special coatings to meet the needs of all occasions. Special coatings are bonded
chemically to the outer surface of the beads for a more brilliant effect. Aurora Borealis, which gives off a rainbow-like effect,
is one of the more popular coatings. Crystal Transmission, Volcano, Aurum, and Dorado are also popular special effect beads.
The special effect and special coating of each bead is permanent. Austrian Swarovski crystal contains approximately 32%
lead. Full lead crystal must contain above 30% lead oxide content in order to be considered full lead crystal.

How Are Beads Measured?
Most beads are measured from hole to hole and rounded to a whole number. Machine
made beads are more uniform from one batch to the next whereas handmade beads
and beads made in nature will vary from bead to bead. If you have a particular
use in mind that depends on precise measurements, please Contact us and ask us
for measurements. For more information on measurements, colors and descriptions
listed on this web site please see
http://crystallized.swarovski.com/Portal.Node/portal?gentics.am=content&p.conten
tid=10007.29317.
Here are examples of bead measurements using a digital caliper. These beads were
selected at random from stock on hand as of this printing.
o
o
o
o
o
o
4mm Crystal AB Fire Polish Round In this example, the diameter of the bead
we selected measured 4.55mm on the digital caliper. Other beads on the
same strand measured anywhere from 4.51 to 4.66mm. This measurement does
not include the hole size.
6x4mm Cobalt Blue Rice Beads In this example, the length of the bead we
selected measured 6.10mm on the digital caliper and the width measured
4.17mm. Other beads on the same strand measured between 6.04mm in length
to 6.16mm. This measurement does not include the hole size.
22x10mm Dark Topaz Matte Feather Dot Lampwork Tube This is a Czech
lampwork bead made that was made by hand. In this example, the length of
the bead we selected measured 19.82mm and the width measured 10.14mm.
Other lampwork beads selected measured anywhere from 20.28mm to 22.16mm in
length. As with most handmade beads, variances in size are quite common
and should be expected.
6mm Lt Emerald Swarovski 5301 Bicone Crystal In this example, the
crystal bead selected measured 5.86mm from hole to hole on the digital
caliper. Other crystal beads from the same factory pack measured anywhere
from 5.75mm to 5.90mm. This measurement does not include the hole size.
6mm Emerald Green Rondell Beads In this example, the hole is drilled
through the center of the bead rather than lengthwise. Rather than being
measured from hole to hole, these flat rondell beads are measured by the
width of the disc. In the case of a puffed rondell bead, such as the 3x4mm
Lt Amethyst Puffed Rondell Beads, the beads are measured by thickness and
width. In this case, the beads are 3mm thick and 4mm wide.
Natural Beads such as Gemstone Beads, Freshwater Pearls, Shell and Coral
Beads vary widely in their measurements. These beads are made in nature
thus they automatically do not have a uniform size and shape. Through
cutting and grinding, gemstone beads, shell beads and coral beads are
formed. In most cases, this is not done in a precise manner. Freshwater
pearls are made in the shells of mollusks and, therefore, are not uniform
in size. The pearl farms sort pearls by approximate size, shape and
quality. When measuring these types of beads, an average size of the beads
on the strands is used rather than measuring each and every bead. Often
times, you will see a range of sizes of listed, for example Camouflage
Jasper Coin Beads 11-12mm. The average bead size on these strands of beads
is 11-12mm. However, beads could be larger or smaller than the stated
size.
Bead Size Chart: Millimeter
*This chart is provided as a reference only. Sizes are not guaranteed.
Abalone is iridescent shell from the abalone sea mollusk.

Ammolite is found exclusively in southern Alberta Canada, and
occasionally in small parts of Montana. Ammolite comes in a wide variety
of colors including red, blue, green, yellow, gold, pink, and many
others. Ammolite is a unique, very soft gemstone, and is rarely
successfully imitated.
Ammonite is a prehistoric sea creature that existed over 65 million
years ago. They were a Chambered Nautilus type of creature that looked a
lot like a snail with tentacles at one end. They lived in the water and
moved around by shifting air between the chambers in their shell. These
creatures evolved quickly, and today scientists use them to date layers
of soil. Ammonites are believed to have preferred shallow water and are
often found along the coastline all around the world including
Madagascar and Canada. The gemstone Ammolite is made of the thin outside
layer of the shell that is fossilized, but is very rare and requires a
specific mineral composition in the environment to have replaced the
minerals in the original shell.
Anneal is the process whereby a material is heated to “red hot” and then
cooled slowly to make it stronger and more pliable. This is particularly
useful for strengthening metal wire so it is softer to work with.

thin layers of metal to enhance color and give a rainbow look to the
base color. Beads with this finish are labeled AB.
Aventurine is a member of the Quartz family. It is most commonly found
in a forest green color, but can also be found in orange, brown, yellow,
blue, and gray. Aventurine is easily identified because it often has

is called the ‘lucky talisman’ and is supposed to increase libido,
reduce stress, and strengthen blood and muscle tissues.

different forms: some clip onto the pendant, some have mounts to glue
the pendant to, and some attach to a ring on the pendant. The purpose is
to hold the pendant flat when worn. A bail turns a bead or gemstone
into a pendant that can be suspended from your choice of stringing
material. Popular styles of bails include prong bails , which are

of agate and/or quartz.
Beryl (beryllium aluminum cyclosilicate) is the name of a family of
stones that includes Emerald, Bixbite, Aquamarine, Morganite, Goshenite,
Golden Beryl, Heliodor, and Honey Yellow Beryl. Pure Beryl is colorless,

often in India. Its mineral name is heliotrope. It was the original
birthstone for March and is believed to be an excellent blood cleanser.

precious metals. Different techniques are used to color brass beads
including oxidation and polishing. The finest brass beads are imported
from Africa or Asia.

like bricks stacked on top of each other. Often used in triangular
fringed earrings. Looks somewhat like peyote stitch sideways, although

be faceted or smooth. The hole is drilled across the top for stringing
so that the bead hangs down.
Bugle Beads are thin tubular shaped glass beads manufactured in lengths
from 2mm to 35mm and a width of 1-2mm. For Decoration, bugle beads can
be either threaded into jewelry, or glued to fabric. These beads can be
used to great effect in cascading style necklaces. Necklaces consisting
purely of silver bugle beads are sometimes called liquid silver.
Bullion is known as French Wire, or Gimp. This is very finely coiled
wire that forms a flexible tube like a spring. It is used for finishing
the ends of strung jewelry pieces. It is threaded over the cord to cover
it where it is normally exposed, such as where the cord goes through the
loop on the clasp at the ends of the piece. It gives a professional look
and protects the bead cord from friction preventing fraying from
exposure. It is good for fancy jewelry that one does not wear often.
Cabochon is a piece of gemstone that is polished smooth with no facets,
often round or oval.
Callotte are metal findings that cover the knot at the end of a string
of beads. Calottes’ (also called clamshells) clamp sideways onto the
knot. Tying the knot around a seed bead and adding a drop of glue
secures the knot. Close the callotte with pliers and snip the excess
thread. These are also called clamshells or bead tips.
Carnelian is a reddish-orange, or a reddish-brown, colored gemstone from
the Quartz family. It has a warm, uniform, and easily distinguishable
color. Carnelian is found all over the world, but it is said the best
comes from India. It is also found in various parts of the United
States.
Ceylon is a type of pearly finish for treating glass beads
Chain Nose Pliers are a pier that is rounded on the outside but has a
flat inside surface. They are good for gripping wire or a jump ring, as
opposed to round-nose pliers, which are better for making loops.
Chandelier Earrings have dangles that hang from a base, sometimes on
multiple levels. They can range from elegant to funky in style. The
dangles give the earrings movement.

the deep, lustrous blue color. Sometimes the element cobalt is used as
a coloring agent when producing glass or crystal to achieve the color
“cobalt”.
Cord is thicker than thread and usually a woven product. Many materials
are used to make cord for beading, such as satin, leather, suede, hemp,
flax, silk, and nylon.
Cord Ends are used to fasten leather and fabric cords or snake chains.

CLOTHING
For those of you who can appreciate both a proper custom fit and handpicked style
options, now you can have affordable, modern, stylish comfort with fine quality fabrics
to create your perfect fit.
HAND CUT FABRICS AND INDIVIDUAL MACHINE WORK
The details make the difference. Each custom clothing item is constructed by me, I hand cut the fabrics and use single-needle
stitching as opposed to the far more common (and cheaper) "double needle" stitching or worse, fused lining of mass-produced shirts,
dresses, and suits.
