WAUSAU EAST HIGH SCHOOL

COACHES EXPECTATIONS

ACTIVITY: WRESTLING

School Year: 2015-2016

The Athletic Code states that each coach will establish in writing their expectations which are to include student athlete behavior. This supplement is developed to identify unacceptable student conduct which is contrary to the ideals, principles, and standards of the school and District. Although a major portion of this supplement deals with expectations as a member of this team, your behavior as a member of our community and within our school society will be recognized. If your behavior is unacceptable, you will be subject to the appropriate discipline explained herein.

Coaches expectations are effective from the official starting date of this season through the last day of your official competition in this sport, and will accumulate on a per season basis only, not over your high school career. Each season requires a coaches expectations to be signed by both student athlete and parents/guardians.

COACHES’ EXPECTATIONS

WRESTLING

PHILOSOPHY:

The reasons for which a person participates in the sport of wrestling are numerous.

Some athletes wrestle because of the competitive aspect; others for the social element; still others wrestle because it is expected by friends or parents. Whatever the reason, as a coaching staff, we are working with these athletes so they have a positive experience.

Participation in athletics does not exempt student athletes from physical education classes or requirements. Student athletes are required to attend and participate in all their required physical education classes. Unexcused absence or non-participation in physical education class will result in removal from practice or games that same day.

“Positive” for the coaching staff means:

1. Having fun. It is true that a team which is successful is usually measured by wins and losses.

In this way, a team that is successful in the win/loss column is usually having fun.

Most important is putting the win or loss into proper perspective. Accomplishing small goals is a success and will result in positive attitudes. Positive people enjoy having fun.

2. Learning about wrestling, including physical as well as mental aspects of the sport. By the end of the wrestling season, the wrestler will be coached on more than 100 different wrestling skills and moves. In addition, they will become accustomed to the rules which govern the matches, meets and tournaments.

3. Learning skills which will be used in other aspects of the athlete’s life. The #1 reason for which we as a staff coach wrestling is to positively influence young adults. By coaching the importance of responsibility, communication, trust and goal-setting, we prepare the athlete for these important aspects of everyday life.

RESPECT

1. The coaches are spending a great amount of time and energy to bring about a successful, enjoyable season. Respect their decisions and abilities and discuss concerns if you are in disagreement with their beliefs.

2. Teammates must work together and respect each other’s abilities and feelings, no matter the age or ability level.

3. Managers and cheerleaders are there to support and encourage. They are a valuable asset to the program and will be treated as such.

4. Officials are the backbone of competition. Without them, we could not compete. Although we may not always agree, the officials’ decisions are final. Accept them, and move on.

5. Parents are usually as much involved in the sport as anyone. They are doing what they believe is best for the athlete and the family. The parents’ concerns will always be heard and acted upon.
