SHELDON WRESTLING SYLLABUS 2010-2011 GENERAL CONDUCT The Husky wrestler must remember that he and his actions is representative not only of himself, but also the entire program, school, community and every other individual involved. Any deviation from high standards of general conduct will necessitate in disciplinary action. The standards apply to the athlete’s conduct within the community and school in general, as well as the athletic program. ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS Wrestlers must conform to the academic requirements outlined in the E.G.U.S.D. Student Handbook. Your academic eligibility will be monitored throughout the grading periods that take place during the season. Academic achievement is also expected throughout the school year. ELIGIBILITY Wrestlers must have the following verified by the Athletic Director’s Office to be able to practice and compete: 1. Attended the parent/athlete meeting with Athletic Director Bob Baker (if a new student to SHS) 2. A recent physical (dated after 6/6/08) on file in the A.D’s Office. 3. Meet all academic requirements as stated in the EGUSD Athletic Handbook. 4. Have the current academic year of the EGUSD Athletic Handbook signed on file in the A.D.'s Office. 5. An updated and completed emergency card on file in the A.D.'s Office (renewed yearly). 6. Signed Sheldon Wrestling Syllabus returned to Head Coach Todd Dilbeck. PRACTICE REGULATIONS *Failure to meet the following expectations may result in disciplinary action by the Sheldon Coaching Staff. 1. Attendance: It is the wrestler’s responsibility to know the practice schedule, attend, and be on time. If there is a known conflict with practice, you must notify the head coach two days in advance and in person. If you are ill, you must call the head coach at 712-2232 by noon of that day. Practices in general will begin with the termination of the school day, and will run for an average of two and ½ hours (Mon.-Fri. approximately 3:15-5:45PM). Holiday and non-school day practice times can be found on the attached addendum. 2. Unexcused Absence: An unexcused absence is one where the coach has NOT been notified in advance of your not being able to attend a practice. Three (3) unexcused absences may lead to your dismissal from the team. Injured wrestlers and those on academic probation are also expected to be in attendance and must follow this policy. Physical training and tutoring must be cleared with the Head Coach (in person) prior to attending to avoid and unexcused absence. 3. Equipment: The equipment necessary for participation includes wrestling shoes, clean tee-shirt and shorts, sweats, and possibly running shoes. Headgear (school issued) and wrestling shoes are to be worn at all times in the practice room. The wrestling portion of practice will take place in shorts and a tee-shirt only. 4. 5. Effort, self-control, attentiveness, punctuality and the desire to learn and accept coaching are also expected of wrestlers. Weight Training: This is a fundamental aspect of training for all successful athletes. The weight room will be used often during practice and all wrestlers are expected to be ready to participate in team work-outs. GENERAL EXPECTATIONS 1. Wrestlers are expected to uphold a high standard of conduct throughout the year. This also includes sportsmanship before, during and after all events. 2. Wrestlers need to be well groomed, demonstrate excellent citizenship both in and out of the classroom, and standout as a role-model athlete on and off campus. 3. Dress code: Wrestlers will be expected to wear a collared shirt and tie on the day of dual meets, and dignified clothing to tournaments. Wrestlers will also refrain from wearing articles of clothing that display team logos other than Sheldon High School athletic teams. The only exception to this rule will be college wrestling shirts that are allowed as practice gear. Wrestlers who do not comply, or wear dress code items inappropriately, may be removed from the line-up for the event. EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES It is every athlete’s responsibility to keep all athletic facilities as neat and clean as possible. The wrestling mats will be cleaned and mopped every day before practice, and stored properly afterward. The coaches will assign a different athlete daily to do this. You will ALL be expected to help. WEIGHT POLICY Athletes will not be expected to lose weight in order to compete at a weight class. The athletes may challenge and compete at any weight where they have the ability to be effective and competitive. Consultation with coaches, parents, and possibly a doctor (suggested) will be used to determine a wrestler's most effective weight-class. Instituted in the ’06-’07 season, all wrestlers will partake in a hydration and body composition analysis by NFHS rules. This test will predetermine the lowest possible weight class, as well as a weight-loss schedule for each wrestler. Once a weight class has been chosen, it is the responsibility of the wrestler to make weight at the Dual Meet or Tournament. Failure to make weight may result in suspension from the next two scheduled events. To ensure proper weight management, wrestlers who are more than 5 pounds over their competition weight by the end of practice on Monday may be pulled from the line-up. It is highly recommended that wrestlers follow the “wrestlers’ diet” as posted on the CIF web site at www.cifstate.org , or design his/her own diet by using the information posted on the NWCA web site at www.nwcaonline.com . Wrestlers may also use this site to monitor their own weight progress chart. TEAM SELECTION & VARSITY LETTERS Selection The Varsity and J.V. selection for the competing (first man) wrestler, for dual meets and tournaments, will be performed by challenge matches between the wrestlers within their respective weight classes. Challenge matches will be held regularly to determine varsity and tiered positions. The purpose of challenge matches is to allow a wrestler to challenge up one position on the depth chart within their respective weight class throughout the season. Selection of the J.V. and Varsity starting team will be based on the results of these challenge matches. JV positions can be altered based on tournament results (head to head, etc.) To be eligible to compete for a varsity position, wrestlers must complete the following requirements: 1. Be academically eligible. 2. Participate the day of and the day before wrestle-offs. JV positions (weight class spots) will be reserved for Freshman and Sophomore athletes only. The coaching staff believes it is in the best interest of the program to utilize these matches as “grooming matches” to better prepare younger wresters for future varsity competition. Exceptions may be made in special circumstance based upon careful consideration by the coaching staff. Varsity Letter Individuals who have amassed 20 Varsity Points within a calendar year (beginning in March) earn a Varsity Letter Award. The perspective of Sheldon Wrestling is that varsity letters are marks of achievement and commitment. Thus, we insist upon maintaining a high standard for athletes to attain a letter in our sport. Varsity Points can be scored, and will be monitored by the coaching staff, by following the attached chart. COACHES’ RIGHTS The coaching staff reserves the right to change or amend the team selection process. The staff also reserves the right to pull an individual from the lineup in spite of challenge results. Reasons for doing so would include (but not be limited to) such things as discipline, ineffectiveness, or lack of effort. The coaching staff also reserves the right to remove an athlete from the team for either blatant defiance of team rules, or behavior determined to be detrimental to the team environment. TOURNAMENTS 1. Meeting place: On tournament days, competing wrestlers will meet at the Sheldon High School Main Gym at a pre-arranged time. Students will be encouraged to call home an hour before the team leaves the site of a tournament. 2. Attendance: All wrestlers are expected to be ready to compete on a weekly basis. If you will not be able to attend a meet, you must let the coaches know TWO DAYS prior to the meet. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action. 3. No one is to leave the sight of competition until the last eligible wrestler is done competing. We arrive as a team; we leave as a team. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT 1. Parental Support: Wrestling produces some of the best trained athletes in all of sports. We urge our parents to come out and support the hard work of our athletes at all the meets. Parents are reminded that positive support is in the best interest of all involved, especially the athletes. Also, it is expected that parents will back the coaching staff by supporting the coaches, their philosophies, and practices. Such support will promote performance and attainment of personal goals, rather than confusing wrestlers with a mixed message. Remember that we all want what is best for student-athletes. 2. Wrestling Booster Club: Many of the unique experiences the wrestlers enjoy are dependent upon parental participation in the Booster Club. Parents who are interested in becoming part of the “team” are encouraged to join the Sheldon High School Wrestling Booster Club. This organization is designed to give the high school team financial and moral support, as well as serve as a social organization for parents and other supporters of the team. Interested persons should contact Coach Dilbeck for membership information. 3. Specific concerns parents may have about their athlete can be addressed with the head coach on Mondays, after practice from 5:30-6:00 p.m. It is requested that prior notice be given via phone at 712-2232. 4. Open Door Policy: Parents are encouraged to attend any of the practices during the season. However, they are reminded that they are there to observe only. Disruptive behavior will result in a request to leave. Again, wrestlers and coaches deserve your positive support. 5. Drivers Needed: The only transportation provided by the Elk Grove Unified School District will be to Delta River League matches; all other transportation must be accounted for by parents. To ensure a quality program, we are asking parents to become volunteer drivers. These people will provide needed financial relief on our travel expenses, as well as create a supportive fan base at our meets. We have found that creating a “home crowd” atmosphere is to our advantage. Maps to all Sac-Joaquin Section Schools can be found on the section web site at www.cifsjs.org .
