Santa Barbara, CA, February 9, 2016 – Santa Barbara DANCEworks is thrilled to welcome trailblazing
New York City actor, dancer and choreographer Adam Barruch for their coveted 2015 residency
(August 31-September 26) at the Lobero Theatre. While in residence with his six-member company,
Adam Barruch Dance, Barruch and will create a new work of Dance Theater based on selections from
the score of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street during their
DANCEworks residency. Mentored by acclaimed Canadian artist, Margie Gillis, Adam Barruch will work
with the company to discover the corporeal language that eventually become a full-scale production of
the acclaimed musical. Using Barruch's gestural and emotionally charged language, audiences will be
taken deeper into the psychological realms of these complex and emotionally charged characters. Don’t
miss a preview of the new work along with repertoire from the company at the DANCEworks
culminating performances on September 25 & 26 at the Lobero Theatre.
In addition, DANCEworks will be providing many opportunities for the Santa Barbara community to get
involved with this dynamic company throughout their residency:
First, Auditions for community performers will be held at the Lobero Theatre on September 1 & 2.
DANCEworks is seeking experienced community vocalists and dance performers who are adventurous,
open-minded, and interested in pushing the boundaries between dance and theater. Applicants should
be prepared to sing excerpts from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and learn some
choreography. A stipend will be provided for the candidates selected. Interested applicants can email

Meet Adam and his company of performers as they headline the 1st Thursday: After Hours reception on
September 3, performing in a cabaret setting onstage at the Lobero Theatre. Dancers Chelsea Bonosky,
Timothy Heck, Jodi McFadden, Zach McNally, Haylee Nichele, Lily Ockwell, and William Dixon Popp will
perform selections from their vast repertoire. More information about this event is available at

DANCEworks’ Friday Club returns for three sessions this year. Launched last year, Friday Club has been
a big hit with fans of contemporary dance in Santa Barbara! Held from 5-6:30 PM each Friday of the
residency, Friday Club offers a rare opportunity to see a choreographer Adam Barruch in action as he

creates an ambitious new work of Dance Theater. Friday Club members have each made a contribution
of $50 or more, which provides access to rehearsals and discussions about the work before enjoying a
reception with Mr. Barruch and his company. Friday Club will be held September 4, 11, and 18 from 56:30 PM at the Lobero Theatre.

About Adam Barruch
Adam Barruch began his career as a young actor, performing professionally on Broadway and in film and
television–working with prominent figures such as Tony Bennett, Jerry Herman and Susan Stroman. He
later received dance training at LaGuardia High School for Music & Art and Performing Arts and
attended Juilliard School in the dance division. Since then, Adam has been on a dizzying path, collecting
awards and residencies for his choreography. His company has performed at Jacob’s Pillow, the Harris
Theatre, Bates Dance Festival and The Yard. As a dancer he has performed the works of Jiri Kylian, Ohad
Naharin, Susan Marshall, Jose Limon, Daniele Dèsnoyers, and is currently a dancer with Sylvain Émard
Danse in Montreal.
As a choreographer, Adam's work has been presented at venues such as Dance Theater Workshop
(NYLA), City Center, and NYU/ Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, The Juilliard School, The AileyCitigroup Theater, SUNY Purchase, New York University, Cedar Lake Theater and Theatre Usine C in
Montreal. In March 2009, he self-produced his first full evening of original dance/theater works at The
Baryshnikov Arts Center. Adam was selected as an Emerging Collaborator for Springboard Danse in
Montreal in 2009. Adam was also selected as a Movement and Dance Artist-in-Residence at the Stella
Adler Acting Studio, where he collaborated with solo-performance artist Lauren Marie Albert. In 2010,
Adam created works for the Ailey/Fordham BFA Senior Concert and NYU Tisch School of the Arts MFA
program.

DANCEworks is gaining broad recognition within the world of contemporary dance and has already
contributed to the careers of groundbreaking choreographers Aszure Barton, Larry Keigwin, Doug Elkins,
Brian Brooks and Mark Dendy.

Aszure Barton, who made her ravishing dance Busk during the first DANCEworks season in 2009,
continues to shine. Barton and her collaborators recently won the first ever Charles and Joan
Gross Family Foundation Prize for Awaa. She is in great demand as an internationally recognized
choreographer.

DANCEworks’ 2010 and 2013 choreographer-in-residency, Larry Keigwin, celebrated the opening
of If/Then, a new musical choreographed by Keigwin and starring Idina Menzel. He was recently
selected by Paul Taylor to be one of three choreographers to create new work for the Paul
Taylor Company.

2011 choreographer-in-residence Doug Elkins sold out the his Joyce Theatre performances of
Hapless Bizarre, paired with Mo(or)town/Redux–the acclaimed dance that Doug made onstage
at the Lobero during his DANCEworks stay. The New York Times’ hailed Mo(or)town as, “One of
the most compelling dance creations of this century.”

Brian Brooks, in residence at DANCEworks in 2012, made his debut at the Brooklyn Academy of
Music with a new work, Run Don’t Run. Brian is currently touring internationally to perform his
duet with ballet superstar Wendy Whelan as part of her “Restless Creature Tour.”

DANCEworks’ 2014 choreographer-in-residence, Mark Dendy, is continuing a streak of
prodigious productivity with an ambitious new work, Labyrinth, which premiered at New York’s
Abrons Arts Center. The New York Times declared, “As long as artists like Mr. Dendy are making
such distinctive, impulsive, personal work, there’s hope for the old town yet.”
