PowerPoint Lesson 6
After finishing this lesson I expect you to:
1) Demonstrate how to create a presentation in outline mode
2) Demonstrate proficiency in adding transitions
3) Demonstrate proficiency in adding clip art
4) Demonstrate proficiency in adding animations
Outline Mode
So far you’ve been typing directly into slides but there’s another way to work in PowerPoint. If
you are good at outlining, you’ll find that PowerPoint will let you create slides while you type an
outline. You do this by first setting PowerPoint in outline mode. Then you type directly into the
left window pane. The slides will be created for you as you type. When you finish your outline
you can go back and add a theme, colors, transitions, animation, and clipart if you like. Follow
these instructions very carefully.
DIRECTIONS
1)Start a new PowerPoint presentation.
 In the left window pane (where you see the thumbnails), click on the outline tab.
 Now click on the box next to the number 1 and type Language Arts
 Press Enter, then press tab.
 Type Some Important Grammar Rules
 Press Enter and then hold the shift key & type the tab key. You should now see a
new slide labeled #2.
2) Type: Subject & Verb Agreement
 Press enter and then press tab.
 Type: If a verb follows to, it is called an infinitive phrase and is not the main verb.
 Press enter & type: A subject will come before a phrase beginning with of.
 Press enter & type: To find the subject and verb, always find the verb first.
 Press enter & type: Sentences often have more than one subject, more than one
verb, or pairs of subjects & verbs.
3) Press enter.
 Hold the shift key & press the tab key. You should now see a new slide labeled #3.
4) Type: Adjectives and Adverbs
 Press the enter key & then press the tab key.
 Type Generally, if a word answers the question how, it is an adverb
 Press enter & type: A special -ly rule applies when four of the senses - taste, smell,
look, feel - are the verbs
 Press enter & type: The word good is an adjective, while well is an adverb
 Press enter & type: When referring to health, use well rather than good
5) Press enter.
 Then hold shift and type the tab key. You should now see a new slide labeled 4.
6) Type Pronouns.
 Press enter and then type the tab key.
 Type: Subject pronouns are used when the pronoun is the subject of the sentence.
 Press enter & type: Subject pronouns are also used if they rename the subject.
 Press enter & type: Object pronouns are used everywhere else (direct object,
indirect object, object of the preposition.)
 Press enter & type: Possessive pronouns show ownership and never need
apostrophes.
7) Press enter and then hold the shift key and type the tab key. You should now see a slide
labeled 5. By now you should have come to realize that the tab key does more than one job – in
fact it does four jobs.
NOTE: Regarding tabs, if your cursor is in the title bar, pressing tab will move you down into the
body. If your cursor is in the body at the beginning of a line, pressing tab will indent that line
Shift-Tab: If your cursor is at the beginning of a line in the body, pressing shift-tab will start a
new slide. If your cursor is on an indented line, it will promote the line (move it to the left).
8) Type Prepositions
 Press enter and type the tab key.
 Type: Use on with expressions that indicate the time of an occurrence.
 Press enter & type: Of should never be used in place of have.
 Press enter & type: Between refers to two. Among is used for three or more.
 Press enter & type: The word like may be used as a preposition and in informal
writing, as a conjunction.
10) Now click on the slides button at the top of the left window pane. You should now see 5
slides. This was an example of creating a presentation in outline mode. It is convenient when
you have an outline already or when you need to create an outline.
11) Now that you have a presentation you can fancy it up.
a) Add a Design theme
b) Add a graphic or two (from Clip Art, Pictures, SmartArt, etc.)
c) Add Transitions to each slide (they can all have the same transition)
d) Add Animations to each slide (perhaps you should set timings or adjust the settings so
that they appear “After Previous” rather than “On Click.”
12) Preview & proofread your slide show. Use spellcheck under the Review tab.
13) Save as Your Name-PPT6 and turn in on my web page.
