July 2011 Dear students and teachers of Japanese language, The 2011 Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) will be administered in Queensland for the Japan Foundation by the School of Languages and Linguistics at Griffith University. About the JLPT In response to the demand among a growing number of people who are studying Japanese, the Japan Foundation and the Association of International Education, Japan, devised the JLPT with the main objective to evaluate and certify proficiency in Japanese of non-native speakers. The JLPT has been administered around the world once a year in December since 1984 (since 2010 mid-year tests are conducted in some cities but not Brisbane). The JLPT is the best-known official test available to nonnative learners of Japanese. There are five different proficiency levels: level 5 is the lowest level for beginners and level 1 is the most advanced level. Here are the details about this year’s test: TEST DAY: Sunday, 4 December, 2011 LOCATION: Griffith University, Nathan Campus APPLICATION PERIOD: 1 August to 2 September, 2011 (LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED) APPLICATION: Students interested in taking the test need to read the information in the Test Guidelines and carefully complete the Application Form. Hard copies of the Test Guide and Application Forms are available from Griffith University, School of Languages and Linguistics Building Foyer (N56) and electronic versions can be downloaded from the News and Events section in the Griffith University School of Languages and Linguistics Website http://www.griffith.edu.au/humanitieslanguages/school-languages-linguistics/news-events/ ) NB: Applications must include: 1) 2 passport-size photographs which must be glued or stapled in place in the relevant boxes. The Japan Foundation is very firm about this. Applications that do not include photographs will not be accepted and will be returned to the applicant. 2) a stamped and self-addressed standard size envelope. When completing the application form pay special attention to contact address for sending the Test Vouchers and the Results. TEST FEES (inclusive of GST): LEVEL 1: $90 LEVEL 2: $90 LEVEL 3: $90 LEVEL 4: $80 LEVEL 5: $80 PAYMENT OF TEST FEE: Applicants should then return their application form together with cheque (please ensure applicants name is written on the back) or money order (made payable to “Griffith University”) (do not send cash through the mail) by the Friday 2 September 2011 to: Dr Catherine Burns JLPT Administrator School of Languages and Linguistics Griffith University - Nathan campus Nathan, QLD 4111 Once the applications are closed (i.e., Friday, 2 September) your receipt will be sent in the stamped self addressed envelope and then test vouchers showing the applicant’s Examinee Registration Number , test details and a map of the University will be sent approximately 4 weeks prior to the test (early November) . Once the confirmation package is received, it is important that applicants keep the Test Voucher in a safe place, as you will need to bring it on the day of the test. On the day of the test, all examinees must have some form of identification (in addition to his/her Test Voucher) such as student ID card or driver’s licence.
