The RCS Grazing Clinic is an intensive two day course on the principles and
practices of sustainable grazing management. This includes how to manage,
design and control different grazing methods for a sustainable and profitable
grazing enterprise.
The course covers the following key areas:
• Learn/refresh the basics of grazing management – participants learn the six
essential grazing principles for a sustainable ecosystem. They develop the
skills to monitor and record changes, understand how to adapt to seasonal
and climate variability and develop strategies for profitable property
planning and overall improved grazing management.
• Practical knowledge – participants get the latest information on effective
fencing, property layout, water design and stock moving techniques. It gives
producers an understanding of how to assess their paddock rest period and
calculate graze period, while accurately matching stocking rate to carrying
capacity. Participants see and learn the decision making processes in the
paddock through hands-on learning activities.
• Tools for the grazing enterprise – participants will learn through the
practical application of the principles, active use of grazing charts, good use
of the planning tools and effective, modern property design.
The course has a complete focus on implementation and deals with the
practical elements that are critical for running a sustainable, profitable business
and ecosystem.

The course outcomes provide graziers with the GPS tools to fully develop their
property mapping activities which form an important part of overall property
management planning. Property owners will develop skills in the use of
GNSS/GPS systems to accurately map their property and connect a GNSS/GPS
handheld device to a property computer mapping program. This will assist with
the management of property information and allow accurate mapping, siting
and monitoring of property resources. A fully completed, accurate property
map is a critical tool in property planning and management.

The aim of the workshop is to provide key common business principles and concepts
to beef producers. On completion of the workshop producers have improved
financial literacy, are able to generate and understand key financial information on
their business and make better decisions about the future profitability of their
business.
Using adult learning principles and case studies, the course demonstrates to
producers that a sustainable business must firstly focus on profitability which
requires informed management of animal productivity without exceeding long term
carrying capacities. Management planning is fundamental to sustainability.

The aim of these practical and regionally customised EDGEnetwork®
workshops is to help grazing land managers improve their
profitability and land condition through better grazing management.
By understanding the relationships between pasture, water, soils,
woodlands, biodiversity, fire and weeds, managers can assess the
suitability of different pasture development options and determine
the financial impact of a range of grazing management options.

The aim of the workshop is:
1. To give people the knowledge of how the natural world functions and what they
can do as farmers and land managers to continually improve the health and function
of their land. To manage the 4 ecosystem processes of energy flow, mineral and
water cycles and biological community dynamics for the purpose of maintaining an
ecological balance on their land.
2. Giving people the skills and ability to make decisions that are right for them and
their family and business, based upon what they had articulated that they wish to
achieve short and long term and a family.
3. Cash flow and financial management that enables people to plan for and make a
profit each year, regardless of the seasonal conditions. And the skills to assess every
business decision, by testing it toward their family and business goals, before any
money is spent or activity is commenced.
4. Grazing planning for those folks who have grazing animals. They learn how to
grow grass when the grass wants to grow and how to ration out the grass when the
plants are not growing. People learn how to manage the growing and the nongrowing seasons and how to use the animals as both a source of income and a tool
with which to change the soil surface to prepare the land for rain.
5. People learn how to monitor and measure what is happening to the soil and the
plant communities on their land. And act in a manner that will create improvement
in the health and density of plant communities.
