Business Studies Mission Statement
Business Studies at Coláiste na Mí will provide students with the foundation for developing
important business skills that will benefit them greatly in the future. A knowledge of
Business Studies is proven to provide a grounding that will enhance job prospects in many
aspects of future employment and it is the aim of this course to introduce students to many
of these fundamental core skills.
The topics in First Year will cover the basics of Business Studies which will include How to
Open a Bank Account, The Difference between Income and Expenditure, Constructing
Budgets, Our Rights as Consumers, Principles of Money, Borrowing and Saving, and also the
Forms of Business Ownership such as Entrepreneurs and Sole traders. Second and Third
Year will build on these core concepts as well as focusing on areas such as Business
Ownership, Marketing and Communications. The students will be provided with lessons
that will introduce them to many of the key components of Business Studies, Economics,
and Accountancy that are studied in both Junior and Senior Cycle.
Students will also be encouraged to be active participants in the learning and will take part
in group challenges and activities within their class groups that enables them to build on and
develop core skills such as leadership, time management, public speaking and selfmotivation that will incorporate the use of the theory from many of the above topics.

The learning is greatly supported by the use of ICT, and students will also have the
availability of using our Business Studies Weebly website that is specifically created and
designed for the students of Coláiste na Mí. The website includes class notes, exam
questions with solutions, practice questions, videos from our students explaining important
elements of topics as well as displays of the students work. Parents will also have access to
an overview of what is being taught to their children in the class and both parents and
students can also view the weekly homework section of the website for exact details of each
nights work. The students will contribute to each topic themselves and this will be an
excellent revision tool in preparation for exams that can be accessed 24/7.
