Behavioral health crisis/outreach programs can be seen as such a service, giving individuals immediate access to behavioral health support without having to come to an Emergency Department. At either end of the acuity spectrum, it is easy to determine which patients should access crisis services versus an Emergency Department. But what about patients where the acuity is less clear? How do we know which patients should move from crisis to Emergency Department and vice versa? As outreach programs, should crisis/outreach programs have different thresholds than the Emergency Department’s when it comes to basic risk tolerance? Does greater provider risk tolerance correlate with greater consumer autonomy? Dr. Jack Rozel will provide a conceptual overview of patient and provider risk in behavioral health, and how risk might be perceived, and managed, in various psychiatric settings. The presentation will be followed by a discussion by Dr. Rozel and Drs. Nolan Hughes, David Yankura, and Alan Severance with session participants that includes case scenarios of unclear or intermediate risk to determine whether there is clinical consensus about which setting is most appropriate for a given patient.
