ISETCSC- STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AND CAREER PLAN
Development Plan: When a student becomes an ISETCSC member, he or she will work with their ISETCSC
advisor(s) to create a development and career plan that provides milestones based on the goals listed below.
(ISETCSC Form page 2). This planning form is due at the beginning of the student’s first semester with the
ISETCSC (either September for the fall or January for the spring semester).
Reporting: Students will use the reporting form (ISETCSC Form page 3) to chronicle their progress at the end of
each semester, and possibly the summer session (a total of two or three reports per year). The faculty advisor will
review the report, sign, and submit a copy to the Center.

List of Long-range Goals (In 5-10 years) – e.g., obtain a faculty position, start own business, seek
government position, go to grad school etc.
List of Short-range Goals (Next 3-4 years) – e.g., publish XX journal articles, make XX conference
presentations, intern with a NOAA lab or programs related to NOAA.
Plan for Developing enhanced Network of Mentors/Contacts – e.g., find someone from NOAA, NCAR
to add to my dissertation committee, reference etc. other ISET students on campus, other ISET students at
partner schools, and other CSC students at other NOAA-EPP Centers.
Plan for Improving Communication Skills – e.g., join a research group, make weekly, biweekly
presentations take a short course on technical writing, etc., give seminars or attend seminars by webinar.
Plan for Improving Research Skills – e.g., obtain training on new research equipment, software etc, read
and summarize a XX journal articles per week, etc.
Plan for Improving Computer Skills – e.g., typing speed, programming, new software as appropriate to
your research
Plans for Community Service: Participate in summer camps, visit local schools, serve as a science fair
judge etc.
Plan to enhance knowledge about NOAA: attend all ISET seminars, follow news on the NOAA web
page, summarize highlights from NOAA activities etc.
