Title: NOAA Hurricane Hunters Squadron Host Organization/location: NOAA, MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL USNA POC: CDR Carl Hager hager@usna.edu Academic internship Required Credentials: open to all oceanography majors; will assist in reinforcing concepts learned in SO244 – Basic Atmospheric Processes, SO345 Atmospheric Thermodynamics, SO442 – Tropical Meteorology and SO431 Synoptic Meteorology Security Clearance: visit request through USNA security office US Citizens only 3rd block only Description: The airplanes of the NOAA Hurricane Hunters are flown in support of NOAA's mission to promote global environmental assessment, prediction and stewardship of the Earth's environment. These versatile aircraft provide scientists with airborne platforms necessary to collect the environmental and geographic data essential to their research. Whether studying global climate change or acid rain, assessing marine mammal populations, surveying coastal erosion, investigating oil spills, flight checking aeronautical charts, or improving hurricane prediction models, the flight crews continue to operate in some of the world's most demanding flight regimes. The focus of this internship is to provide in-flight familiarization of the research / work conducted by the scientists and pilots in the squadron.
