NOAA BIG Barbara Tobe Scholarship The Annual High School Scholarship Program recently renamed the NOAA BIG Barbara Tobe Scholarship provides $1,000 scholarships to academically talented high school students in the metropolitan area. These college-bound students must demonstrate a well-rounded activity schedule in school and the community. They must plan to major in a NOAA-related discipline in college with particular emphasis on science and engineering. Children of NOAA employees and/or students from the scholarship committee’s selected schools are eligible. Since the creation of this program, nearly $50,000 in college scholarships has been given to deserving students. WHO MAY APPLY? 1. Children of current NOAA employees may apply. 2. Students from selected high schools may apply. WHEN TO APPLY? Application forms and instructions for the NOAA BIG Barbara Tobe Scholarship are normally made available via the NOAA BIG website during the month of May. WHAT ARE THE GENERAL CRITERIA? Each applicant for the scholarship must indicate a desire to major or minor in one of the following NOAA-related categories: any of the sciences e.g. biology, physics, chemistry, oceanography, atmospheric sciences, meteorology; mathematics, computer science, engineering, information or management technology; business, management, administration, contracts, law, aviation, geography, medicine, or related fields. In general, any college major or minor that relates to the oceans or the atmosphere or any major or minor that supports the NOAA administrative or managerial infrastructure. 1 WE NEED YOU? You can serve as a member on the committee board and help in the planning and decision processes. You can play an active role as well as have the opportunity lead any subcommittee if needed.
