The Sandown Cobras Football Netball Club is pleased to advise that
Steve Goodie has been appointed as Senior Coach for the 2015
Season.
The 44 year olds time in football has been varied and successful as a
player (around 400 Games), coach (Level 2 accredited) and
administrator (Club President 10 years), bringing with him a wealth
of experience on and off the field to assist the club as a whole to go
to the next step. He will step into the Southern Football League for
the first time.
Cobras General Manager Brett Phillips welcomed Goodies’ arrival
"We are really pleased to have landed someone with the
knowledge and experience of Steve Goodie, who has come highly
recommended for his football nous, intellect and student of the
game. I want to thank Phil Dickson, Mark Scott and Ross Tiller who
joined me on the selection panel as we worked our way through a
field of quality candidates over the last month.
"We went out to identify the most appropriate person to lead us
through our next phase as a football club and we are confident
Steve is the right man to deliver what we are after. Whilst his
primary job & love is to Coach, he will be a very valuable resource
for us off field and will help us drive a number of initiatives to
secure the clubs future"
"The last 4 years has seen the club go from bottom end Division 3 to
top end Division 3, and now we want to take the next step to climb
out of Division 3 and continue to build on the foundations formed
on and off the field to make Sandown a sustainable strong club well
into the future. We welcome Steve and his family to the club"
Goodie is married to Carolyn and has 2 daughters Alexandra and
Chloe and for the past 30 years has worked for Great Pine Nursery
Wholesale in Monbulk as a Nurseryman.
Goodie's football journey has linked him with Gembrook Cockatoo
Football Club 1986-7 & 2002-2014 (where he is a Life
Member, Senior Playing Coach 2002-03, Senior Premiership
Player/Under 18 Coach in 2004, and served as President 2005-2014,
part of that while still playing, retiring in 2010. During his time as
President the club played in 3 Grand Finals in 1st Division for the
first time in 23 years, where he was a Match Day assistant to Senior
Coach Travis Marsham.
A stint at EFL powerhouse Vermont winning back to back
premierships as a player in 1989/90.
Upwey-Tecoma Football Club 1991-94 & 1999-2001 (where he was
named in the Team of the Decade 1986-1995 and 1996-2005 being a
4 time Premiership player in 1991,1993,1994, & 1999). During his
first stint as a player at Upwey-Tecoma in the Yarra Valley
Mountain District Football League, Goodie while playing also took
on the role of Assistant Coach to former Fitzroy player David Noble,
who would later go on to coach the Western Bulldogs Reserves in
1999 under Terry Wallace. Goodie served as Noble's forward scout
at the Bulldogs and would also sit in the coaches box on Match Days
gaining a valuable football education from a higher level. Goodie
became Senior Coach at Upwey-Tecoma in his final 2 years at the
club in 2000-2001, with his team Runner Up in 2002.
Cora Lynn Football Club 1995-1997 where he was Senior Playing
Coach, taking the team from last on the ladder to playing finals.
Rythdale-Officer Cardinia Football Club 1998, where he was playing
Assistant Coach to renowned Noble Park Premiership Coach Mick
Fogarty.
Goodie also spent some time at the Eastern Rangers TAC CUP Under
16's as an Assistant coach to Brett Fisher, a team that featured GWS
No1 Draft pick Jonathon Patton.
Goodie's personal honours include 5 Senior Best and Fairest
Awards across his playing career in 1991,95, 96, 97 and 1999.
In accepting the position, Goodie said "I am really looking forward
to the challenge of taking the club to the next level, on the back of
the work done on and off the field over the last few years, and
really bringing together further the strength of numbers the club
has had. I will be looking to bring an attractive modern brand of
footy to advance the club forward"
A meet the coach evening has been scheduled for Wednesday
November 19th and pre-season will commence on Monday
December 1st. Further announcements in regard to Steve's senior
coaching team as well as our Reserves and Thirds Coach will be
made over the next few weeks as we build into Pre Season.
