Urban areas can be mapped to a reasonable standard by amateurs 2 (such as myself) in a reasonable time – they are in many ways easier to map than forest or moorland. Our stock of good local maps has greatly increased thanks to the efforts of a few enthusiastic club members. I am keen to get even more people mapping their own “back yards”. School mapping is also a great “bite sized” introduction to mapping. I am available to offer advice and encouragement. Mapping activity this year: Fairy Knowe and Doon Hill – professionally mapped by Markus Pinker A fairly long story behind how we came to have this mapped. The simplified version is that a long time ago Clyde had a map of this area, surveyed and drawn by Donald P. and copyrighted to CLYDE. We were thinking of remapping the area but discovered that FVO were having it remapped using our map as a base. Through a misunderstanding FVO thought they had CLYDE’s permission to both use “our” area and to use our map as a base. Careful negotiation by Christine came to the very sensible solution that we should take the copyright of the new map, and pay for it, and allow FVO to use the area for training events. We even got a SOL to hold on the area in combination with the FVO SOUL race in Dunblane. Craigallean and Mugdock – the woodland has undergone some work (felling) and some new bike tracks have appeared. Map is being updated by Dave R. Erskine – being extended by Patrick Gartconner and St Agatha’s Primary Schools – mapped by Dave R. Glasgow West End – Patrick’s map being extended by Simon Gardner Houston and Crosslea – being extended by Andy P and Donald P Mains Plantation – near Bearsden. May make a useful training area, being mapped by Dave R Milngavie(ISSOM) – a new area around Milngavie Town Centre. Used for last year’s AGM and now completed! Mapped by Dave R. Whitelee Wind Farm – Large area mapped by Dave Peel for the Windfarm – not strictly a CLYDE map, but a useful area. Alastair D has planned some permanent courses for them that will be installed. Windy Hill – Last year’s report said: “Stirling have finally got their PG machine working and have completed the moorland mapping on Windy Hill, they will map the small wooded area when the vegetation has died down a little.” Eventually completed and used for SoSOL Pending areas There are quite a number of nice small areas to the West of Glasgow that we could map. The limitation is funding. The new professional map of Windy Hill cost £2,500, and Croy would cost ~£1500. There is no way we can hope to recoup this cost when running events which attract ~100 competitors. Even with half funding from grants, such maps are unlikely to break even in a reasonable number of years. Encouraging our club mappers seems to be the best way forwards, but even a SoSOL sized area is quite an undertaking. My personal experience is that woodland mapping is a lot harder and slower than urban mapping. Balloch Castle Country Park – will be mapped by Donald P and Dave R – waiting for the clearing of Rhododendrons to be completed – UPDATE AFTER AGM put on hold as fungal infection means that off-path access is essentially banned for ~5 years Craigmaddie/Loch Ardinning – was Croy Hill – was explored by a CLYDE posse early in the year. Would make a useful SoSOL sized area. “Ball park” quote was £1500 for a professional map using a PG plot. There is an existing map, but it is not really suitable as a base and in any case needs to be extended. 3 Failfley and Auchnacraig – urban/wood mix Hillington – urban Linwood – urban/woodland with sports hub? Mains Plantation – near Bearsden. May make a useful training area Milton of Campsie – possible urban area Neilston Pad – Terry O’B may have an interest. Overtoun – We have had a quote for remapping the very old map of Overtoun (above Dunbarton). This was to have been remapped as part of the Development Fund Grant but the increase in cost of it and Windy Hill means it is not yet started. Ross Wood – existing map well out of date due to forestry work, and not in OCAD format, but worth another look School mapping Jennifer Lennox (Active Schools Coordinator (Merkland Cluster)) has been in touch with Alastair and myself with a view to getting various schools mapped. She has even been able to get some large scale data from the council’s GIS department that we can use as a base map. Current maps in OCAD and actually usable Auchengillan (Scouts) Balmaha Bearsden (B+W street map) Barshaw Park(ISSOM) Collie Nathais Dunrod Hill Erskine (ISSOM) Fairy Knowe and Doon Hill Garelochhead Glasgow West End (ISSOM) Houston and Crosslea(ISSOM) Houston Woods Mosshead (ISSOM) Mugdock Rouken Glen The Slacks Windy Hill School maps Barsail Primary Bearsden Academy Gartconner and St Agatha’s Primary Schools Milngavie Primary Mosshead Primary Newmains Primary Vale of Leven Academy Note that ISSOM is the relatively new standard for mapping areas for sprint/urban races. It is generally used for urban or mixed urban areas which are mapped at scales of 1:4,000 or 1:5,000. 5.
