Seasonal Timber Crew Jobs
FORESTRY TECHNICIAN (TIMBER SALE PREP), GS-0462-4/5
The Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is planning to fill up to 4 temporary Timber Crew positions for
the 2014 field season. The positions are part of a dedicated team that works to implement the Forest’s
timber sale preparation program. Seasonal crew member duties include timber sale unit layout,
compass traverse, boundary posting, tree marking, timber cruising, and GPS mapping of sale areas.
Knowledge of tree and shrub species, map and compass skills, basic knowledge of timber harvesting
systems, and experience with cruising instruments are preferred.
The Timber Crew works full-time, typically 5 8-hour days per week during training and introduction, and
4 10-hour days per week during production (mostly in the field). The work is physically demanding, and
includes walking while carrying a vest loaded with gear on steep terrain, in dense brush, and in rain or
snow as well as hot weather in the summer. We take pride in our safety record and emphasize a culture

Tour of Duty: These positions will be filled as 1039 temporary seasonals, with a tour of duty less than 6
months. Target start dates are in May. Actual dates will be determined at the time of hiring. End dates
are usually dependent on weather and access to work sites, but are typically in November or December.
Hourly wage: $14.45 - $16.17, depending on education and experience.
Location: Darrington, Washington.
Accommodations: Forest Service bunkhouse space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. These
are shared spaces with a common kitchen, bathroom, and living room. Cost of housing is deducted from
bi-weekly pay. Employees are responsible for maintaining bunkhouses in a clean and orderly condition.

The Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is located in western Washington, in Region 6 (Pacific
Northwest). It extends over 140 miles along the western slope of the Cascade Range, from Mt. Rainier

Darrington Community Information:
The town of Darrington is located in eastern Snohomish County, about 1 ½ hours’ drive northeast of
Seattle, at the base of the North Cascades. The Sauk and Stillaguamish rivers flow nearby, and
Whitehorse Mountain provides a stunning
backdrop to the town. Plentiful rainfall
keeps the rivers flowing and the forests
green.
The community has about 1,500
residents, and includes a grocery,
hardware store, clinic, and several other
businesses. The public library is part of a
large county-wide system. The area hosts
several annual events including rodeo,
Summer Meltdown concert, and the
Darrington Bluegrass Festival.
