The characters move through the cortex trying to get back to the forebrain, a part of the brain that houses the sensory and motor control of a person, as well as his or her thinking and language (Kasschau & McTighe, 2014, pg 154). Because Joy and Sadness are fictionally no longer in the forebrain, Anger, Disgust, and Fear are left to control Riley, the person they are inside of (Rivera & Stanton, 2015). In one particular situation, Riley is eating dinner with her parents when they ask how school had gone. Because of Riley’s limited emotional intelligence, due to the lack of two emotional strongholds, Riley is easily upset at the question. The school day had not gone well and was still very upsetting for Riley. However, the emotions driving her limited her ability to process the questioning and instead took the questions as a challenge (Rivera & Stanton, 2015). Psychologists believe that emotions have three distinct parts: physical, behavioral, and cognitive (Kasschau & McTighe, 2014, pg 335). This was displayed in this section of the movie because Riley cognitively interpreted the question incorrectly, leaving her frustrated with Anger eventually driving her emotional state. She then became visibly frustrated with her face getting red and, eventually, Riley crying, showing her physical response. All of this resulted in Riley yelling at her parents and slamming away from the table when she was told to go to her room, thus behaviorally expressing her emotions in the way she sounded and the way she moved expressing her body language.
