Registration for Exceptional Students All students that have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 Plan must have an IEP Meeting at their home school prior to the course request to determine if modifications and accommodations can be met in a virtual learning environment. Special Education Teachers/Guidance Counselor Expectations Review special education student transcripts. The special education teacher and counselor should review transcripts together. Identify special education students needing online courses to graduate. Hold IEP Team meetings with a discussion concerning placement in online courses and accommodations. The teacher should complete the IEP documentation form. The completed form with required signatures should be forwarded to the Office of Virtual Schools. Students should not be enrolled in online courses until the IEP Documentation Form is received in the Office of Virtual Learning. The primary diagnosis for students needing online courses should be Learning Disabled or Intellectually Gifted. Special education teachers should make sure that students are following the 4-year plan listed in the IEP. This should minimize students’ placement in online courses. Online courses should be the last resort if classes are offered at the school. Special education students should be given priority for placement in classes taught during the school day. Allowable accommodations should include the following: 1. Extra time on assignments 2. Extra time on tests 3. Abbreviated assignments 4. Abbreviated tests Role of the Special Education Teacher Provide a list to the online monitors who will monitor the special education students Provide the IEP At-A-Glance with accommodations to the online teachers Monitor student progress in SMS Contact parents of students who are not reaching their pacing guide goals in order for schools to hold an IEP team meeting for dropping courses Role of the Student Attend the IEP team meeting Contact the online teacher if experiencing difficulty with online assignments Complete all course work in a timely manner Attend afterschool tutoring Role of the Parents Attend the initial IEP team meeting to discuss placing student in online courses Learn the course requirements for courses his/her child will take Sign the IEP Documentation form if the team decides that the student will be placed in a virtual class Monitor student progress Contact the online teacher if they have questions or concerns
