Help Shape the Future at Destination 2013
Students, Faculty Earn Awards for Service
Three more Destination 2013 events are scheduled for
Washington, D.C., New England and New York City.
Join President L. Jay Lemons for an evening of
conversation about a future that is already taking shape.
Learn how our community of alumni and friends can
help enhance this great institution in ways that can add
tremendous value for our students.
The tradition of service remains strong at
Susquehanna. Students and faculty were honored
recently with the school’s annual SU CHEERS
awards. CHEERS, or Celebrating Helpful
Experiences Through Engaging Relationships in
Service, is sponsored by Susquehanna’s Center for
Civic Engagement (CCE), the campus hub of social
responsibility, facilitating such programs as fund
drives and volunteer activities.
Current students also will be attending each event. Meet
and help guide them on the paths to their own
destinations. Students attending the previous Destination
2013 events have greatly appreciated the opportunity to
network with alumni and gain their perspective.
For more information or to register for the remaining
events, please see the SU Bridge calendar.
Students and faculty were nominated by their peers.
Winners were then chosen by a committee composed
of CCE staff and such university staff members as the
university chaplain, Greek adviser and an athletics
department representative.

Remember your acorn
from Welcome Week?
Danielle Purciello ’07
recently rediscovered
hers. She wrote and
shared her story of
how that little acorn
sparked some big
memories of
Susquehanna.
As Danielle was preparing to move to a new
apartment, her acorn fell out of an old purse. With a
smile and laugh, she took a picture with her camera
phone and sent it along with a note to her
Susquehanna friends. As is often the case, Danielle
and her friends are scattered across the country. Some

Led by Pete Palladino ’90, the band will return to

the all-alumni tent.
Don’t remember their ’90s hits? For a preview of what
you’ll hear at Homecoming, look for their new album,

are even in different countries. But that picture and
text, and the memories they generated, were a way to
bring them all back together.
"Acorns to me signify something with huge potential.
A tiny acorn grows into a grand, strong oak tree. It's
funny how something so small can become something
so big. I was also amazed at the power that tiny acorn
had in bringing back so many great memories of
friends, professors, and accomplishments," Danielle
wrote. "Thank you to SU for the acorn, the education,
the lifelong memories and friendships, and for
helping me grow, be strong, strive for the best and
never settle for anything less."
Alumna Remembers Coach Schweikert with
Fundraiser
The John Stark (N.H.) High School swim team, led
by coach Emily Jaworski ’02, hosted the first annual
Swim to Drown Out Multiple Myeloma, dubbed the
“Schweikert Schwim,” a two-hour swimming
marathon that helped raise money for the disease.
Emily coordinated the fundraiser in honor of her late
SU swim coach, Ged Schweikert, who passed away
from the disease in June 2008.
In testament to Ged’s legacy, Emily’s efforts were
supported in overwhelming fashion by fellow
swimming alumni, who sent donations from across
the country. The event raised more than $3,600 to
help fight multiple myeloma.
Emily’s husband, Keith Testa ’02, a local
sportswriter, wrote about the event. His article can be
viewed online.
