PROPOSALS:

Social Sciences

New Course War and Society 3 credits

Originator: James Miller

CATALOG DESCRIPTION : In this course we will explore the ways that war and violence were central to the formation, consolidation and expansion of European nation-states from the French Revolution to the collapse of empires in Europe. We will begin by reading works on the nature and origins of violence in modern society. We will then examine the rise of mass politics and the ideologies that produced widespread destruction in the wake of the French and Industrial Revolutions When we move to the twentieth century, we will focus significant attention on the history of the two World Wars, but we will be equally concerned with identifying the changing notions of legitimate state and interpersonal violence.

Course readings will include primary and secondary sources, but films and music will also be important.

Motion: Approve – Kevin Crawford

The committee voted 8 – 0 - 2 to approve the new course proposal as amended.

John Rapczak, Social Sciences, and John Owens, Physics, abstained

Nursing

New Course Focus on Nursing Pharmacology 3 credits

Originators: John Rood

Barbara Bradley

CATALOG DESCRIPTION : The student nurse is in a unique position regarding drug therapy. Originator: Paula Cardillo

REVISED CATALOG DESCRIPTION : This course provides a foundation of physiology, pathology and pathophysiology as it related to the human abdomen specific to the performance of abdominal

Sonography. Students begin to recognize normal and abnormal imaging as it relates to anatomy, pathology and pathophysiology of the abdomen. Bioeffects, ALARA principle, pertinent in-vitro and in-vivo studies, exposure display indices, and maximum safe exposure levels will be incorporated into the didactic and laboratory classes. Laboratory experience will include development of entry level scanning techniques and protocols on the human abdomen. Students will demonstrate the ability to perform entry level abdominal sonographic examinations using real-time sonographic equipment, doppler and color doppler equipment with various transducers. (Prerequisites: DMSD 2100) Lecture: 3 hours, Laboratory: 2 hours

Revised Program Diagnostic Medical Sonography / Vascular Track 66 credits

Originator: Paula Cardillo

Anatomy, pathology and pathophysiology of the vascular system including arterial, cerebrovascular and venous systems are included. Scanning protocols for the upper and lower extremity are addressed. Bioeffects, ALARA principle, pertinent in-vitro and in-vivo studies, exposure display indices, and maximum safe exposure levels will be incorporated into the didactic and laboratory classes. Laboratory experience will include the use of plethysmography and realtime Sonography to evaluate and record the hemodynamics of arterial flow. The recognition of normal anatomy, basic pathology and pathophysiology are addressed. Students will demonstrate the use of plethysmography and real-time Sonography equipment with vascular transducers, doppler and color doppler to perform entry level vascular Sonography examinations. (Prerequisites: DMSD 2100) Lecture: 3 hours, Laboratory 2: hours

Policy 3.2.1, Course Credit

DISCUSSION

A discuss ensued about the process of bringing courses into compliance with this policy. Department

Chairs will review catalog pertaining to their areas to ensure their courses are conforming to policy.

Committee agreed upon the following course of action:

All required changes will be brought to the attention of the Curriculum Review Committee.

1. If, by correcting the laboratory and field/clinical courses, there is no change in credit hours, the department will simply provide a summary list of courses to CRC for approval. E.g.,

Course # Course Title Credit Old Lecture/Lab hours New Lecture/Lab hours

This information will be announced at the Curriculum Review Committee meeting and will be included in the minutes.

2. If the correction of laboratory and field/clinical courses results in a change in credit hours, the department will be required to submit a course and/or program proposal.

Motion: Approve – Kevin Crawford

The committee voted unanimously 10 – 0 to approve the procedure of departments notifying

the Curriculum Review Committee of corrections to lecture/lab hours

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Art Department

ARTS 1420 Four-Dimensional Design – name change

Department is changing the course name to Four Dimensional Animation and Design in order to make the content of the class more clear to potential students. There are no changes in course content or learning outcomes.

Pre-requisite/Co-requisite Changes

Engineering Department

PHYS-1050 Physics for Technology I, add MATH-1750

Biology Department

(to OES 10/8/13)

CHMT 1121 or BIOL 1000 are both pre-requisites for BIOL 2480 (to OES 12/2/13) for biotech students. Dept. wants to add BIOL-2480 as a co-requisite so students may take BIOL 1000 and/or CHMT 1121 concurrently with

BIOL 2480 to satisfy the pre-req. In order for students to complete the biotech certificate in two semesters, this has to be an option.

Motion: Approve – Kevin Crawford

The committee voted unanimously 10 – 0 to include the announcements in minutes
