Report from Cathedral Council
Date of Meeting: 1 April 2014
Council met on 1 April. Some of the items discussed were:
Vision 2014. There were updates on the activities of the visioning day groups. Members of the congregation are
very welcome to get involved in vision areas. As a reminder, the groups are:
 Group A – Informal Singing Group (St John’s Glee Club) (Simon Chan)
 Group B – JUST – St John’s Unreal Social Team (Blair Martin)
 Group C – Review the Cathedral Website (Helen Wootton)
 Group D – Lady Chapel “in the round”/open space (Nigel Leaves)
 Group E – Providing Answers to FAQs (Anna McPherson)
 Group F – “Speed Dating 101” (Chris Gourlay)
 Group G – Cathedral Oral History (Christopher Alderson)
Welcome brochure. A dedicated group from the Visioning Day has collaborated with Lisa Clarke from the Dean’s
office to develop a welcome brochure describing the cathedral, our ethos and community. This will be part of a
welcome kit for new members of the Cathedral Community or those interested in joining. The brochure will also
be on the information stand and will be a great resource for all members to offer to newcomers or visitors. A
“What to expect when you join us for a service” brochure is also being developed.
Fair trade purchases. A discussion was held on fair trade in the context of the Earth Charter. The Cathedral is
taking a stand on behalf of the community – together we can influence the decisions people make about ethical
purchases. This has influenced our decision about Easter egg chocolates this year. There are more details in
Community News.
Plaque to recognise Country. There was discussion about wording for a possible plaque to recognise ‘Country”
and other pioneers and contributors to the life of Brisbane, which would be provided near the West Door of the
Cathedral.
Tapestry cushions. Proposals for conservation and display of the tapestry cushions from the previous pews and
from the Lady Chapel were shown to Council. More details appear in Community News.
Fête de la Musique. This event is a worldwide celebration of music that happens every year on June 21st. The
Cathedral, one of the host venues, will program music at intervals between 9am and 5pm.
Congratulations to Paul de Jersey. Council is writing to the Hon Paul de Jersey to congratulate him on his
appointment as Governor of Queensland.
