For this assignment you will undergo research on a major earthquake or volcanic
eruption that has occurred over the last century. You can choose from the list below
or choose a case of your own.

What to include (earthquakes):
 A description of the geological event: the plates involved, the plate
movement, location of the focus and/or epicenter. Include a diagram.
 Earthquake hazards: description of the hazards that followed the
earthquake. For example, did the earthquake trigger a tsunami, landslides,
fires, aftershocks, and/or damage to infrastructure?
 An overview of the impacts: social (death toll, displacement), economic
(cost of damages), and environmental (flooding, pollution).
 Other: can you include any other significant events to your case study? For
example: lack of government response, difficulties in providing aid,
fundraising, organizations providing aid.
What to include (volcanic eruption):
 Description of the volcano: type of volcano and its characteristics,
description of how the volcano formed. Include a diagram.
 Volcano hazards: description of the hazards that followed. For example,
lahars, pyroclastic flow, volcanic ash clouds, etc.
 An overview of the impacts: social (death toll, displacement), economic
(cost of damages), and environmental (destruction of forests, air and or
water pollution).
 Other: can you include any other significant events to your case study? For
example: lack of government response, difficulties in providing aid, spark
awareness, fundraising, organizations providing aid.
