MP Behavior terms abnormal response to novel conspecific syn - abnormal social discrimination def - deviation of the normal behavior of animals towards an unfamiliar animal child of abnormal social investigation (MP:0001360) and abnormal response to novelty (MP:0003107) (some annotations for this term are under abnormal social/conspecific interaction) abnormal social memory retention def - deviation in the ability of animals to recall familiar animals child of both abnormal response to novel conspecific and abnormal learning/ memory (MP:0001449) with child: social amnesia (inability to recall familiar animals) with child: annotations for enhanced social memory retention def - increased ability to recall familiar animals after periods of separation increased and decreased children for abnormal social investigation (MP:0001360) with social withdrawal (MP:0001361) as a child of decreased social investigation abnormal socio-sexual investigation def - altered behavior of animals to approach and examine potential mates child of abnormal social investigation (MP:0001360) and abnormal sexual interaction (MP:0002566) Some possible issues here, for example there is a note of "females prefer same sex scent markings in an odor preference test" that is currently under abnormal social investigation that maybe should be moved to this term? (J:125716) abnormal latency to social interaction def- deviation in the length of time before an initial interaction between two individuals decreased and increased children We may need to clarify the difference between interaction and investigation. The use of abnormal social/conspecific interaction vs abnormal social investigation seems muddled. obsolete increased/decreased aggression towards mice and replace with increased/decreased aggression towards conspecific abnormal heterospecific interaction def - deviation of the normal behavior of animals towards a member of another species There are some annotations to abnormal behavior that could be moved here see: J:89708, J:127877; J:139886 obsolete increased aggression toward humans (MP:0001357) add new term of increased aggression towards heterospecific def - when compared to controls, subjects exhibit greater than the normal level of domineering, assault posture and/or hostile physical action towards members of another species abnormal social/conspecific interaction modify definition to: deviation of the normal behavior of animals towards a member of the same or a closely related species I'm thinking we may need closely related species for some mouse inter species studies abnormal social dominance behavior deviation in the expected tendency to exert a priority of access in an approach situation or to leave an avoidance situation involving conspecific(s) (modified definition from http://notes.utk.edu/bio/unistudy.nsf/854ba168246c6472852563ee006f31ee/457f4c865776ef6385256 459004e1ff3?OpenDocument) This may be difficult to distinguish from abnormal aggression but at least one annotation indicates that dominance may be abnormal while aggression is normal (J:138589) abnormal conspecific play behavior syn - abnormal social play behavior def - Behavior performed with a conspecific in the absence of normal stimuli or behavior elicited by normal stimuli but not followed to the completion of the ritualized behavior pattern. (modified from NBO:0000075. The NBO definition of social play (NBO:0000049) is " Play behavior that is associated with the socialization of an individual into the group." That seemed both overly narrow and lacking the definition of "play" so I went with a modified version of the parent term). Although it may be that "social play" is a narrower synonym of conspecific play, as some of the other children of play behavior (imitative play) would typically involve a conspecific. child of abnormal social/conspecific interaction (MP:0002557) I've included conspecific in the term to distinguish this from general play behavior. I could not find any annotations discussing play with anything other than another mouse so I don't think we need to add abnormal play behavior at this time. abnormal paternal behavior def - alteration in any response from the father or attending male related to the ability of young to thrive We have a few annotations that could be moved to this term and it would be a nice balance to the existing term abnormal maternal behavior Modify the definition of abnormal maternal behavior to alteration in any response from the mother or attending female related to the ability of young to thrive (bold text added) Many of the annotations to abnormal sexual interaction (MP:0002566) refer to "failure to breed" or "males/females breed poorly". We may want to add the terms impaired mating behavior def - decrease in the ability of animals to successfully complete mating behaviors I was also thinking about how to handle "failure to breed" but I don't think the term "absent mating behavior" would work so I think we might be better off putting failures under impaired mating behavior. abnormal rooting behavior syn - abnormal rooting reflex def - any abnormality in the reflex that causes a newborn or infant animal to turn its head toward anything that strokes the cheek or mouth, searching for the object by moving its head in steadily decreasing arcs until the object is found. (NBO:0000400 child of abnormal reflex existing annotations under abnormal behavior Abnormal learning/memory/conditioning has only the child abnormal learning/memory. This seems odd, why have this child at all if all the other terms are under it including terms that refer to conditioning. I would obsolete abnormal learning/memory and move all the child terms up a level. There are annotations to abnormal behavior for mice lacking all behaviors dependent on a particular sense (mostly hearing or sight) and a few with impaired olfactory related behaviors so we may eventually want to add these terms: abnormal auditory related behavior - any anomaly in a behavior related to the actions or reactions of an organism in response to a sound (NBO:0000316) abnormal visual related behavior - any anomaly in a behavior related to the actions or reactions of an organism in response to a visual stimulus (NBO:0000314) abnormal olfactory related behavior - any anomaly in a behavior related to the sensation of odors. This is a child of chemosensation in NBO. Some points from the NBO The MP has some multi-slash grouping terms that could be made obsolete if we adopted some of the terms from the NBO. For example: abnormal kinesthetic behavior could replace abnormal motor capabilities/coordination/movement In the NBO kinesthetic behavior is defined as "Behavior related to the movement of the body's muscles, tendons, and joints." and has the children involuntary movement behavior and voluntary movement behavior. Coordination would need to be moved. In the NBO this is under vestibular behavior (def - Behavior related to the awareness of body balance and movement.) which is under: cognitive behavior (Behavior related to cognitive processes.) sensation behavior (Cognitive perception of a sensation by any of the five senses -vision, touch, smell, taste, and hearing. I'm not really satisfied with this definition) perception behavior by means (undefined) Cognitive behavior also includes learning/memory behavior There are some existing annotations to abnormal behavior that could be moved to abnormal cognitive behavior: J:170670 - impaired attention (attention behavior, NBO:0000455, is a child of sensation behavior, I don't think we have the need to add attention behavior or sensation behavior terms) J:183467 - impaired cognitive performance J:96229 - attention J:13320 - "less alert" currently annotated to abnormal sensory capabilities/reflexes/nociception so consider adding abnormal cognitive behavior def - any anomaly in a behavior related to cognitive processes (NBO:0000607) If we adopt abnormal sensation behavior. This would break up the slash term "abnormal sensory capabilities/reflexes/nociception." Nociception and sensory capabilities would be under abnormal sensation while reflexes would now only be under abnormal involuntary movement. I don't see any annotations to abnormal sensory capabilities/reflexes/nociception that couldn't be moved, so I'd recommend abnormal sensory capabilities/reflexes/nociception be made obsolete and we add the term: abnormal sensation behavior def - any anomaly in behaviors related to cognitive perception of a stimulus by any of the senses (modified from NBO:0000308) Consider changing abnormal eating/drinking behavior to abnormal consumption behavior (NBO:0001845) The term abnormal circadian rhythm (MP:0001502) should be made obsolete and replaced with the term abnormal circadian behavior to differentiate this from physiological processes that occur on a 24 h cycle. NBO has the term circadian behavior (Behavior related to any biological process in an organism that recurs with a regularity of approximately 24 hours. NBO:0000084) The term abnormal rhythmic behavior (def - deviation in any specific action or reaction of an organism that recur with measured regularity. GO:0007622) could be added and used to group abnormal circadian behavior and abnormal sleep behavior (MP:0011396) abnormal coping response (MP:0003062) vs coping behavior (NBO:0000103) We have coping response under depression related behavior but the NBO has it under stress related behavior (not in the MP). I'm thinking we should consider adding abnormal stress related behavior to the MP (child of abnormal behavior to mimic NBO) and move abnormal coping response to be a child of this term. abnormal stress related behavior def - any abnormality in a behavior related to how the body reacts to a stressor (a stimulus that causes stress), real or imagined. (NBO:0000469) There are some annotations under abnormal behavior that could be moved to this term J:117778, J:101849, J:7690?, J:115270 (freezing while swimming); J:15554 (movement on cold concrete); J:106812 and others (response to tail suspension) also possibly some of the open field studies that are not associated with anxiety for some reason abnormal fear/anxiety-related behavior would be a child of this term in addition to its current placement Summary of proposed high level term changes abnormal behavior abnormal cognitive behavior (new term) abnormal learning/memory/conditioning abnormal sensation behavior (new term) abnormal auditory related behavior (potential term) abnormal thermosensation abnormal touch/ nociception hyperresponsive abnormal motor coordination/ balance (assuming we don't add NBO parents) abnormal visual related behavior abnormal olfactory related behavior abnormal consumption behavior (name change) abnormal heterospecific interaction (new term) abnormal kinesthetic behavior (new term) abnormal involuntary movement abnormal physical strength abnormal voluntary movement stereotypic behavior (this is under voluntary movement in NBO but I would stick with MP placement) abnormal rhythmic behavior (new term) abnormal circadian behavior (name change) abnormal sleep behavior abnormal stress related behavior (new term) abnormal coping response
