Kelli Moran-Miller, PhD
Dr. Kelli Moran-Miller is the Director of Counseling and Sport Psychology for
Athletics at the University of Iowa. She is a licensed psychologist, a Certified
Consultant with AASP and a member of the USOC Sport Psychology Registry. In her
current role, she provides counseling and performance psychology services,
including: individual counseling and educational programming for student-athletes;
performance psychology services for student-athletes, teams and coaches; and
consultations with academic advisors, sports medicine staff, coaches and
administrators. Dr. Moran-Miller also is the psychology faculty member with Iowa’s Sports Medicine
Fellowship and supervises a practicum site in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics for doctoral
students in the University of Iowa’s counseling psychology program.
Prior to her position at the University of Iowa, Dr. Moran-Miller earned her B.A. from the University of
Notre Dame and her M.A. and PhD. in counseling psychology (specialty in sport psychology) from the
University of Missouri-Columbia. She also has a graduate minor in multicultural psychology. She
completed her pre-doctoral internship at Colorado State University, where she was part of the Sport and
Performance Program. Her post-doctoral residency was at Virginia Tech, where she split time between
the university counseling center and the athletics department.
Ross Schumer, MD
Dr. Ross Schumer is a fellow in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
specializing in sports medicine and foot and ankle surgery.
Dr. Schumer is originally from Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. He earned a B.S. in
biology at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.
While at the Air Force Academy, he earned Academic All Conference
honors in lacrosse and was team co-captain during his senior year. Upon
graduation from the Academy, he was selected for the Air Force Health Professions Scholarship
Program. Dr. Schumer obtained his medical degree, graduating magna cum laude, from Jefferson
Medical College in Philadelphia, PA and completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Wright State
University in Dayton, OH. Following his residency, he returned to the Air Force and was privileged to
serve five years as an orthopaedic surgeon and team physician at the United States Air Force Academy
and Air Force Academy Preparatory School in Colorado Springs, CO. Dr. Schumer also deployed for six
months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Dr.
Schumer is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, a fellow of the American
Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a member of the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons, the
American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle
Society.
Jacob Erickson, MD
Dr. Jacob Erickson is a fellow at the Iowa Orthopaedic Sports Medicine &
Research Center specializing in sports medicine and family medicine.
Dr. Schumer is originally from LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He attended A.T. Still
University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, MO. He
went on to complete residency training at Mayo Clinic Family Medicine in
Rochester, MN.
DOUGLAS L. STRUYK, JD
Doug Struyk joined Carney Appleby Law as an associate in 2012. Doug is a native
of Council Bluffs, Iowa, graduating from Saint Albert High School in 1988. He
received his Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from Iowa State University
in 1992. Doug received his Juris Doctorate from Creighton University School of
Law in 1996 with Cum Laude honors and was admitted to the Iowa Bar in June of
1996.
After graduating from law school, Doug was Chief of the Iowa Department of
Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s Agricultural Diversification Bureau. After
working at the Department of Agriculture, Doug returned home to manage his
family’s business, Struyk Turf, Ltd. In 2002, Doug was elected to the Iowa House
representing Council Bluffs. During his time in the Iowa House, he was elected
Assistant Minority Leader and was the Ranking Member of the House State
Government Committee. He also served on the Judiciary, Economic
Development, Commerce, and Agriculture Committees. Doug retired from the
House 2010. In November of 2010, Doug was named Chief Legal Counsel to the
Iowa Secretary of State’s office. Doug also served as the office’s senior legislative liaison. In May of
2012, he was selected by the Speaker of the House to serve as his Executive Officer, a position Doug
held until joining Carney Appleby Law.
Carney Appleby Law serves IATS in all matters relating to Governmental Affairs & Lobbying in the state
of Iowa.
Terry Noonan, MS, ATC
Terry Noonan is in his fourth year as Director of Athletic Training Services at the
University of Iowa.
Noonan joined the Iowa staff after serving as Executive Director of the Human Sport
& Performance Program and Director of Outreach Athletic Training Services at the
University of Northern Iowa since 2007. Noonan served as the director of the Sports
Medicine/Athletic Training Program at Oklahoma State University from 1999-07.
In his most recent position, Noonan directed a collaborative program between Cedar Valley Medical
Specialists PC, Allen Health Systems and Northern Iowa.
Responsibilities included the supervision, management and coordination of the clinical personnel
employed in the community outreach athletic training service division and the XL Sports Acceleration
programs.
Previously, Terry coordinated, supervised and administered all facets of the Athletic Training/Sports
Medicine Program at Oklahoma State, serving as Head Football Athletic Trainer from 1999-06. Noonan
worked with the Cowboy football team that earned invitations to the Houston, Cotton and Alamo bowl
games during that time.
Noonan held the position of Head Athletic Trainer in the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and
Instructor in the School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Studies at Northern Iowa from 198599. At UNI he supervised and administered medical coverage of 19 intercollegiate sports. He worked
with Panther football teams that reached the NCAA I-AA playoffs in eight seasons, including the national
semi-finals in 1985, 1987 and 1992.
Noonan held the position of Assistant Athletic trainer at Northern Iowa (1981-83) and served as Athletic
Trainer at Columbus HS in Waterloo (1981-83). Terry has been a Nationally Certified Athletic Trainer for
32 years. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and served a six year term
on their BOD four of which were on the executive committee as Secretary Treasurer and chair of the
Finance Committee.
He is a current member of the Iowa Athletic Trainers Association. He is a member of the Iowa Athletic
Trainers Association Hall of Fame, District Five of the NATA Hall of Fame, and received the Most
Distinguished Athletic Trainer award from the NATA in June 2012 at their national meeting. He holds
Certification in Active Release Techniques for the total body, and Certification in First Aid and CPR.
Noonan earned his bachelor's degree in Recreation Administration from Loras College (1978), with a
minor in Business Administration. He later earned his Master of Science degree in Recreation
Administration from Eastern Kentucky (1979). Terry and his wife, Jeralyn, have one son, Casey.
Bill Maxwell, MS, CSCC
Bill Maxwell is in his 18th season with the University of Iowa strength and
conditioning staff. Maxwell is responsible for Men’s Basketball, Rowing, Men's
Golf and Women’s Gymnastics. Prior to joining the Hawkeyes in 1997, Maxwell
served as assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Kansas
(1991-97). He oversaw strength and conditioning programs for the Jayhawk
Olympic sports, including basketball, baseball and swimming and diving. He also
assisted with the Kansas football program.
Maxwell earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from East Carolina University in 1990, where
he competed for the Pirate football team. Maxwell served as a graduate assistant strength and
conditioning coach at Kansas before becoming a fulltime member of the Kansas staff. He also earned a
master's degree in education from Graceland University in May 2009.
Maxwell was named a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach by the Collegiate Strength and
Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCC) in May 2009 and is also CPR/AED certified.
