Function: Maintains and delivers paraprofessional library services for library users, off campus sites and the community with primary responsibility for the circulation desk duties including the circulation of library materials and maintenance of the automation system to perform at optimum level. Due to staff reductions, this position is also responsible for secretarial and technical processing duties.
Essential Function:
Performs all aspects of opening and closing the library and the circulation desk
Maintains a working knowledge of the EOS circulation system and its processes
Supervises circulation desk operations including management of student workers, reserving titles for patrons, and placing/removing library holds on student records
Greets, assists and refers patrons according to their needs
Answers patron queries in person and on the phone, including placing requests and renewal of materials
Checks in and out library materials at all locations
Collects monies for fines, payments for lost or damaged items, replacement of student ID cards, reserves and copies printed from the internet stations
Maintains circulation records and runs statistical and annual reports as required by the Director of Library Services
Trains, coordinates, and supervises student workers in all aspects of circulation including the ID picture process, the shelving of checked-in materials, and regularly scheduled shelf-reading to maintain an organized print collection
Participates in goal setting and the institutional effectiveness process
Places library and personal materials on reserve at the request of teaching faculty, with the approval of the Director of Library Services
Conducts daily collection of book drop materials
Prepares daily money drawer and makes deposits when necessary
Performs basic library equipment maintenance
Assists patrons in operating machines such as the online catalog, PC = s, printers, copiers and locating information using microfilm equipment
Rotates newspapers on a daily basis and withdraws newspapers on a monthly basis
Implements, supports, interprets, and enforces all library policies and procedures
Keeps the Director of Library Services informed of potential student and/or staff issues or concerns (Secretarial)
Makes recommendations for improvements in library services and collections
Maintains library procedures manual for library student assistants (Secretarial)
Maintains various types of listings for periodicals, Texana collection, videos and special collection for all CBC campuses
Keeps ID records of all CBC system employees
Handles all the functions and paperwork for the shuttling of library materials to the Alice,
Kingsville and Pleasanton campuses
Handles all in-house binding repairs (Technical processing)
Participates in the processing of print and video materials for addition to the collection
(Technical Processing)
With the supervision of the Library Director, resolves problems with vendors
Serves as liaison with service repair technicians
Serves as liaison with vendors (Secretarial)
Participates in issue resolution regarding circulation records disputes during registration
Additional Reference Duties:
Open and close the library during the evenings and on scheduled Saturdays, for Upward Bound, when librarians are not available
Helps maintain reference collection and advises patrons of new reference materials
Answers patrons reference questions in-person and over the telephone when librarians are not available
Assist patrons with research questions as requested
Keeps current on reference materials, issues, policies, and new techniques by reading professional journals, catalogs, and enrollment in webinars
Orders, prepares, and displays public information forms and other publications including campus and community event flyers and schedules with the approval of the Director of Library Services
Provides basic reference services; directional online catalog assistance; and instructs patrons in the use of online databases
Performs library tours to English, Government, History and Nursing classes as needed
Serves on college committees as assigned
Serves as a representative of the college in professional organizations and community programs.
Requirements:
The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually acquired through a combination of education and/or experience equivalent to:
An Associates Degree or advanced specialized or technical training in an academic library setting
A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent preferred
