Urenui School Curriculum Statement: LEARNING LANGUAGES Rationale: Urenui Learners will be exposed to a variety of cultural experiences through language including: being immersed in Te Reo Maori and encouragement to use basic Te Reo Maori with correct pronunciation; exposure to and experiences in New Zealand sign language. Guidelines: 1. Te Reo is taught to each class weekly for 1 hour by a Te Reo specialist and reinforced by teachers in classroom programmes and through ‘Connected Learning.’ 2. Regular contact is maintained with Ngati Mutunga. 3. Teachers model correct pronunciation to children through reinforcing the Te Reo programme in classes. 4. Children are given the opportunity to be part of the school ‘Kapahaka’ group and attend practises in class time. 5. A Marae visit is planned yearly alternating an overnight stay in odd years and a day visit in even years at our local Marae in Urenui. 6. Classroom environments reflect Te Reo Maori language where possible and Maori/English labels visible to children. 7. All children participate in Kapahaka Terms 1 & 2 to encourage and become familiar with Kapahaka. It will then be optional in Terms 3 & 4 for those interested.
