Welcome to the CGD lunch seminar: Protozoa and helminth infections in domestic animals in Zambia by Joyce Siwila-Saasa, University of Zambia, Samora Machel School of Veterinary Medicine & Epidemiological and Molecular studies of Zoonotic Tuberculosis at the wildlife, livestock & human interface in Zambia by Musso Munyeme, University of Zambia, Samora Machel School of Veterinary Medicine Monday 28th September, 12:15-13.15. Lunch sandwiches will be served from 12.00. (First come first served) Location: Tanngrisner1 (5th floor, VHC-building) Protozoa and helminth infections in domestic animals in Zambia are very important from a public health aspect. In this presentation the focus will be on the zoonotic parasites Cryptosporidium and Giardia and results from epidemiological studies conducted in humans, cattle and other domestic animals will be presented. Results from research on helminths (Soil transmitted helminths in children, filarial infections and poultry helminths) will also be presented. Bovine tuberculosis has insidiously and mutely devastated livestock and wildlife of the Kafue Basin in Zambia. From abattoir data, evidence showed that during the late 1980s to the early 1990s, there were unusually high proportions of tuberculosis in animals particularly from the Kafue basin. The findings from this study have provided useful epidemiological information on bovine tuberculosis in Zambia. The results provide a strong platform for future strategic control measures for mycobacterial infections in areas with a human/livestock/wildlife interface and those without. Most welcome!
