With sales of £1.5 billion in 2011, the business is focused around three major product areas - aerostructures, engine products and transparencies, plus a number of specialist products - electro-thermal ice protection, fuel and flotation systems, and bullet resistant glass. The business has significant participation on most major civil and military programmes. GKN Aerospace is a major supplier of integrated composite structures, offers one of the most comprehensive capabilities in high performance metallics processing and is the world leading supplier of cockpit transparencies and passenger cabin windows. Bakgrund till examensarbetet/Background of thesis project For the main portion of the engine components that GKN Aerospace develops the thermal environment is very important to be able to accurately predict. Temperature gradients across the components are often the main challenge in the design and in order to increase accuracy of our computational tools more and more effort is being put into the development of coupled CFD-FE analysis. Several initiatives exists within GKN to develop tools for coupled CFD-FE analysis and this thesis is intended as an individual study regarding the subject and to benchmark internal methods with state of the art methods. Uppdragsbeskrivning/Assignment description The main objective of this master thesis is to contribute to the development of our heat transfer CFD and FE predictions tools by: Literature study on coupled CFD-FE analysis for thermal applications. What different approaches/methods exist? Which seems most suitable for the applications GKN wants to use them for? Test the different methods, including internal GKN methods, on various cases that are typical for our applications and compare with: o Our current methods which have no direct coupling between CFD and FE. o Conjugated CFD. o Test data. Recommend methods for our different applications. Kvalifikationer/Qualifications A background in Engineering Physics or Mechanical Engineering with focus on fluid mechanics and heat transfer is a requirement. Some experience in CFD and/or FEA is considered favorable.
