My work is directed towards enhancing knowledge in spatial and physical planning
about creating a more sustainable urban development. In particular this involves
decision-making, planning processes, plan-making and urban design in municipal
comprehensive planning. In my thesis work I am concerned with the relationship
between urban form and its influence on the use of energy for transportation and
heating of buildings on the one hand and statements, aims and strategies in
decision-making documents, including physical plans on the other hand. The
interplay between these bodies of knowledge and action can be described as a
dialectical relationship between the rethorics of planning and the reality of actual
urban development.
