CLASS TITLE: FIRE PROTECTION SPECIALIST
ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)
This is work inspecting government, municipal and other public buildings, and/or institutions to
determine if fire hazards exist, or inspecting and enforcing activities involving combustibles,
flammables, crude petroleum, and fire equipment.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Inspects state owned and leased properties and other properties as assigned or requested for
fire safety and prevention.
Enforces all laws relating to the prevention of fires.
Determines the adequacy of corridors, doorways, stairwells, smoke and heat detectors,
electrical systems, fire detection and extinguishing systems, construction of materials where
fire-related, noncombustible or fire retarded properties are required, as well as the adequacy
and means of exit from the building in the event of fire.
Reviews blueprints for safety deficiencies prior to construction.
Reinspects assigned properties to determine compliance with applicable laws, rules, and
regulations where deficiencies have occurred.
Responds to requests from fire departments and citizens for advice relating to fire safety
regulations.
Follows through with legal proceedings when necessary to correct hazardous conditions liable
to endanger life or property in the event of fire or explosion.
Prepares detailed reports of all inspections, identifying deficiencies, and action to correct same;
maintains records of inspections, deficiencies, and action taken for correction.
Enforces all fire safety laws relating to the storage, sale, use, keeping, manufacturing, handling,
transportation or other disposition of combustibles, flammables, carbide and crude petroleum,
or any of its products and the prescription of material or receptacles and buildings to be used
for such purposes.

Installs and maintains fire extinguishing equipment; services, recharges, marks and tags fire
extinguishers and provides standards of operation for those engaged in such activities; and
gives written examinations to determine the
competency of individuals to perform the licensed operations regarding fire extinguishers.
Conducts investigations to determine cause of explosions, conducts crime scene search and
interviews witnesses and suspects, and testifies in court or hearings regarding investigations.
Conducts investigations of in proper installation and servicing of fire equipment and fire
protection systems.
Performs related work as required.

Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective communication.
Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and equipment used in fire prevention.
Ability to conduct fire inspections of properties for fire safety and prevention.
Ability to enforce laws relating to the prevention of fires.
Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating
to fire prevention.
Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.

Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques.
Ability to prepare reports relating to fire prevention.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of professional or
paraprofessional experience in fire prevention, fire protection systems installations, or other
construction inspection related experience, and in accordance with Florida Statute 633,
certification as having met the inspection training requirements set by the Division of State Fire
Marshal.
Experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college
education.
