Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
Our return to school from Christmas vacation has gone very
smoothly. Our students came back ready to concentrate,
rested, and in good cheer. They have stepped into second
semester quickly and smoothly.
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
Our Cathedral Chapel, dedicated to the Sisters of Providence, has been remodeled since Thanksgiving, with most
of the work done by teacher Dr. Kevin Caspersen. If you are at school, please stop in to visit and notice the new ceiling,
the openness, and changes that have been made. It is such a nice area in which to pray! Remember, you are always
invited to join us for morning liturgy on Tuesday – Friday at 7:00 a.m. On Mondays, we have a Communion Service.
Thank you so much to the many students and some parents who joined Dr. Robert Arthur and me in taking down
the Advent/Christmas decorations on the exterior of the school last Saturday. It is wonderful that when asked for
assistance, such a large number of students and parents respond positively!

Announcements:
I am pleased to announce that the Catholic Youth Organization is once again able to provide
Cathedral High School with one-campership (scholarship to attend camp) at Camp Rancho
Framasa in Brown County. This is a six-day session to Traditional (ages 7 – 16) or Adventure (ages 13
– 15) camping and is valued at $425. The camp is coed. If you are interested, please see Mr. Worland in
his office, or contact him at dworland@cathedral-irish.org or at 317/968-7337. You will be asked to write a
500-word essay and give some additional information.
An assembly will be held honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King on Friday, January 14th. This day will follow the spirit
assembly schedule, but we will move to the Robert V. Welch Student Activity Center after leaving 8 th period. The assembly
will run from 2:46 – 3:10 p.m. Please feel free to join us if you can at this time.
The Guidance Department will be administering the PLAN for freshmen on Saturday, February
12 here in the SLC. Testing will begin at 8am. The test fee is already included in freshmen fees,
so if you have already registered and paid, please have your student see Mrs. Butler (formerly
Ms. Tate) for a refund. Please direct students and parents to see/contact her to register and/or
for additional questions.
 The PLAN is the “pre” ACT or practice ACT. The test will measure a student’s current
academic development. It is also a strong predictor of success on the ACT. There is also an
interest inventory component which will show students what careers fit their interests and can help guide them as
they plan out their four years in high school.
 Deadline for sign-up is Monday, January 24th.
Mrs. Taria Butler
Dear Parents,
On February 14th we will be beginning a program for young women called “ENDOW: Educating on the
Nature and Dignity of Women”. This is a study group that meets once a week for 8 weeks and is open to any female
student. The purpose of this program is to inspire young women with the possibilities of their womanhood, encourage
women to embrace their God-given spiritual and physical gifts, challenge women in service to their families, community, and
church and to support women as they bring their gifts and talents in to the plan that God has laid for them. Study groups will
be led by trained faculty and staff members and we will be using Pope John Paul II’s encyclical called Letter to Women as
well as scripture as part of our study program. If you are interested in learning more about this program or getting your
student involved please contact Charlene Witka (cwitka@cathedral-irish.org) or Sarah Erotas (serotas@cathedral-irish.org).
Sincerely,
Charlene A. Witka

In December, teacher Nancy Hartman, Diversity Director Ramona Powell, and I attended an ISACS conference in
Chicago. We each gave a presentation at our last Professional Learning Communities meeting about the topic that spoke
most to us. Since we had each gone to different programs, we brought much information back to the faculty.
 Mrs. Nancy Hartman most enjoyed Aaron Cooper’s talk entitled, “I just want my kids to be happy: The Challenge to
Educators.” He notes eight points that he views as necessary for this to happen.
Eight Seeds to Sow
Research supports:
 Good physical and mental health
 Spirit of Gratitude
 Ability to be close to others
 Optimism
 Meaning and purpose in life
 Spiritual life
 Gratifying activities
 Acts of Loving Kindness
Then till the soil!
The ISACS Conference was an excellent one with very informative and inspiring speakers. Our keynote speaker
was Sir Ken Robinson, international speaker about education in the upcoming century. There is an excellent UTube video of his presentation, which can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDZFcDGpL4U. If any of
you wish to watch this 11-minute presentation by Sir Ken Robinson and then share you insights and reactions, I would like
to hear them! I can be reached at dworland@cathedral-irish.org or at 317/968-7337.

Natalie Kotterman from Butler University will be a full-time practicum student in the Guidance Office this semester.
She will be here each day from 7:30-3:45. Natalie was here first semester one day a week for her internship.
Reminder: It states in the Blue Book that students need to be called in by 9:30 am.
Parents/Guardians should be aware that if they are calling after 9:30 a.m., they must speak to an
actual person to insure that their student’s attendance record is accurately updated and they
should especially speak to a live person if they are calling after 9:30 a.m. to request an early
dismissal. Many freshman students are telling their parents to just come in to the front office and we
will call them out of class. This is disruptive to the classroom and it is not the way we do this at Cathedral.

The International Food Club is offering open enrollment from now until January 13. Students in the club eat at

Service Outreach News:
Our new year offers inspirational service opportunities for our Cathedral students.
Class Service Projects Robert Greenleaf, noted servant leader, provides us with the following important thought: “Caring
for persons, the more able and the less able serving each other, is the rock on which a good society is built.” At Cathedral,
we are actively involved in building a good society, just as Jesus invites us, in our many good works of service. In January,
sophomores will be helping to serve our popular spaghetti dinner to the Lord’s Pantry members on Wednesday, January 12
from 3:30-7:15 PM. Freshmen will also help at the Christmas Store on January 13 to help this agency prepare for next
Christmas. Another group will travel to Camp Atterbury on Saturday evening, Jan 29, led by junior Liz Subrin, to support
the soldiers before their deployment to Afghanistan. Details on all of these on-going class service projects are noted below
in Service Opportunities as wonderful expressions of thanksgiving, giving and grace.
Giving. A sincere thank you is extended for the wonderful and kind acts performed by so many. Thank you.
“Make It Mine” Service Outreach Cathedral students will lead another wonderful day of engagement for IPS middle
school students on Saturday, February 26 at the University of Indianapolis. Cathedral artists, musicians, athletes, scholars
and dancers will lead six activity centers regarding music, art, athletics, reading, writing, and art. The theme of the day is
MAKE IT MINE. More than 150 Cathedral students will be needed to be reading buddies during the next year and to
encourage the reading of EIGHT books. Our next MAKE IT MINE event will take place at University of Indianapolis on
Saturday, February 26. Reserve this date now in your calendar to help out on this special day. We performed a smaller
Make It Mine event on December 4 at IPS 106. Mrs. Foster, the school principal, shares that the rest of her fifth and sixth
9
grade students cannot wait until our February 26 event at the University of Indianapolis. Click here for the sign up form.
Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School and are current for all
hours received since the start of school. There is a small button in the upper right hand corner to view the
service hours. For the 2010-11academic year, service hours for seniors were due December 1, 2010 to
meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2010-11, freshmen, sophomore and junior
hours are due March 1, 2011. The status of service hours for these underclassmen will be shown as
satisfactory or unsatisfactory on the third quarter report card. If the hours for last year were completed,
hours earned after April 23, 2010 may be credited to the current year’s requirement. We are accepting
service on a project basis as well. After Sep 1, hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the
date of service performance.

supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each month.
The balance of 2010 and 2011 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community needs.

address challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in our immediate community and world-wide.

Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance. Please check
the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not accepted as

Meditation:
Mark 1:29-39
“Everyone is looking for you.” (Mark 1:37)
Have you ever noticed how each gospel writer tells the story of Jesus in a somewhat different way? The basic story line
remains the same, but each author emphasizes different details, in keeping with the overall goal of the gospel he is writing.
Take Mark’s version of the way Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law. Mark highlights Jesus taking her by the hand and
helping her to her feet as he heals her. Such a scene of intimacy and compassion fits with Mark’s overall goal of showing
how Jesus is close to us, how approachable he is, and how deeply he is concerned for our well-being. In a similar passage,
18
after taking a little girl by the hand and raising her from her deathbed, Jesus immediately asks her family to get her
something to eat (Mark 5:43).
Because Luke often emphasizes the value of community and fellowship, he tells how the disciples interceded with Jesus on
behalf of Peter’s mother-in-law (Luke 4:38). Elsewhere, Luke goes into detail regarding a group of women—a minicommunity—who followed Jesus and supported him financially (8:1-3).
Then there’s Matthew, who highlights Jesus as the fulfillment of the Hebrew prophesies about the coming Messiah. At the
end of his version of this story, Matthew tells us that Jesus performed these healings to fulfill what was written in the Book of
Isaiah: “He took away our infirmities and bore our diseases” (Matthew 8:17). So here we have three versions of one story,
each one showing us something new and different about Jesus and his love for us. And because God designed the gospels
this way, we can all come to a richer and fuller understanding of Jesus.
The next time you read a gospel story, make it a point to find that same story in another gospel and read it closely. Look for
any additional details or insights that this story gives you. Remember: God gave us the Bible so that we could grow closer to
Jesus and love him more. What better way than to see him through the eyes of four inspired writers instead of just one?
“Jesus, reveal yourself to me through your gospels. Help me to see you more clearly and love you more deeply as I ponder
you in the Scriptures.”
Blessings,
Principal
