Other Safe School initiatives At CMPS we are dedicated to implementing and embedding the OCDSB’s Community of Character Values in our daily practice. We offer leadership and service learning opportunities to our students on a daily basis. We are piloting a new bully prevention program entitled WITS. The WITS Program brings together schools, families and communities to create responsive environments that help children deal with bullying and peer victimization. WITS has two components: the WITS Primary Program (Kindergarten Grade 3) and the WITS LEADS Program (Grades 4 - 6). CMPS’s Code of Behaviour adheres to OCDSB Policies and Procedures and the system-wide initiative of Community. These expectations are outlined in the student agendas. The Code of Behaviour describes appropriate Facilities and Resources The 5,650 square meter school is located at 260 Leamington Way. The school has just over 380 students with a capacity for 650 pupils. The two storey school includes 20 regular classrooms, 7 kindergartens, double gymnasium and a library. Chapman Mills PS is a beautiful two storey building featuring bright colours and an abundance of natural light and open spaces. The ten million dollar building is one of the most environmentally friendly in the district. From an energy perspective, the mandate for the new school design was to embrace new technologies in both energy conservation and modular building systems. To that end, the exterior walls of the school are made of a factory finished highly insulated metal panel system Our technologically enhanced school offers wireless access, student laptops on carts, and projectors targeted at bringing the world into our classrooms. Our double gym, with a full stage provides ample opportunity for athletic and creative pursuits. The new library, with floor to ceiling windows will have a growing collection of books. We also follow the fundamental principles stated in Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting in Ontario Schools (2010) • • • • We recognize that the primary purpose of assessment and evaluation is to improve student learning. Our teachers use a variety of assessment methods to monitor and support student achievement including daily observation, pencil/paper tasks, projects, oral and visual presentations, response logs, quizzes, end of unit tests etc. Programs are differentiated in the classroom to ensure the success of each student. Individual Education Plans are designed to support the progress of students with specific learning needs. PM Benchmarks and GB Plus are school wide assessment tools used to assess reading abilities in the primary classes. CASI and La Trousse d’evaluation en Lecture are used in the junior grades. School Improvement Plans and Initiatives As a school we decided that this year’s School Improvement Plan for student achievement (SIPSA) would focus on expectations 1.5, and 1.6 of our Language curriculum document. Our smart goal states “By June 2014, students will improve their ability to respond to selfselected text at the ‘just right’ level and demonstrate their ability to understand implicit information as well as extend their understanding as measured by a reading response’’. Teachers collaborated in creating tasks, assessment materials and protocols for assessment. Teachers will be engaging in moderation of student work where they will identify areas of strength and areas of need. For the upcoming weeks staff will focus on reading strategies that will help students improve their ability to infer and extend their understanding. Parents can support their child’s understanding by asking the following questions during reading times. How do you think this character feels? Do you agree with the decisions made by the main character in the story? Why? Who do you think this book was written for? What do you think is the author’s message? How do the pictures help you understand the text? I think the character acted this way because …. What evidence from the text supports your thinking? Where / when do you think the story took place? How do you know? Educating for Success – Inspiring Learning and Building Citizenship 6 Our focus on Literacy includes: the further development of a “book room”, a staff resource area that supports classroom programming, the continued implementation of our district initiative on Balanced Literacy, and a focus on Using Higher Order Questioning, Co-creating Success Criteria, Giving Descriptive Feedback, Using Accountable Talk, and Utilizing Exemplars. • • • • We continue to use “A Community of Character” as a guiding principle for developing caring citizens by teaching and celebrating the ten character traits (acceptance, respect, appreciation, responsibility, fairness, optimism, perseverance, empathy, integrity and cooperation). Our “school climate improvement plan” is very important. We are continuing with the process of defining our community as well as traditions and practices. Partnership and communication between home and school will continue to be an important initiative at Chapman Mills Public School. Many of our teachers are embracing the idea of Classroom blogs to provide regular and timely feedback to parents/guardians on the learning taking place. Communication also takes place through the use of emails, phone calls and the school website. Leadership Recognition “Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.” Students The students at Chapman Mills P.S. participate in a variety of activities to augment life at the school and in the community.
