The Lake Mills Area School District World Language Department wants all students to succeed in their world language education. We understand that one of the skills we learn when studying a foreign language is learning to effectively communicate with limited linguistic resources. This skill comes into play all throughout ones career, even when writing in English. (We have to express a thought, but can't use all the words we want, we have to use terms/phrases that the employer prefers.) In order to have the highest success in his or her world language education, we ask that each student maintain academic integrity.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Your teacher is trained to recognize violations of academic integrity. Please use the information below to inform yourself and avoid cheating in any way in this or any other class.
What is Academic Integrity?
Lake Mills High School has strict guidelines concerning academic integrity. You will find detailed information on pages 7 & 8 of the Lake Mills High School Student Handbook. No form of academic misconduct is tolerated in this class. The consequences are described in the Student Handbook. If misconduct is discovered or suspected, your teacher will confront you (preferably in private, if possible) and appropriate action will be taken. The level of consequences will be determined based on Lake Mills High School’s guidelines.
Can I get outside help?
In language classes, the situation is particularly delicate because outside help from a friend, a tutor, or a native speaker is not necessarily discouraged. You may consult this person to read over your written work and note corrections to be made, to help you with a particularly difficult assignment, or to help you prepare for an exam. However, because your teacher will have many opportunities to get to know your own potential, it becomes obvious when the level of outside help goes beyond what is acceptable and therefore you are not learning from the experience. To make sure you are following the guidelines of the Academic Integrity policy, please make sure you are getting help for a word or short phrase rather than the whole assignment itself.
What about online translators?
Online translators do a pretty good job these days. But again, your teachers can easily tell when students use these options. It is OK to translate one word, or a short phrase if necessary. But you should not depend on this technology. You will learn very little from the experience and you will risk violating the Academic Integrity policy. The only acceptable use of computer vocabulary assistance is www.wordreference.com
(an online
French or Spanish/English dictionary).
Will violations of academic integrity in this class follow the consequences in the Student Handbook?
