Art Adventure: Week 1
Dorothea Lange, Migrant Mother, 1936
The artist uses photography to document images from the Great Depression, like
this one. One woman’s strength is captured on film during great hardship as she
struggles to provide for her three children. This photo is one in a series, each photo
Lange gets closer to her subjects. The frame is filed to the edges with this family and
the mother is square at its heart. This photo has become an icon of the Great
Depression, reprinted worldwide.
Robert Delaunay, Saint-Severin
Delaunay created a new style of painting to capture the gothic interior of SaintSeverin. Using energetic brushstrokes and heavy patches of color he conveys the
solid columns and arches, the play of interior light and the majesty of this Gothic
Parisian church. Delaunay painted this church, the oldest and arguably one of the
most beautiful in Paris, several times. This painting is the second of seven.
