Gothic Children’s Book Project- 3XM Task: To create a children’s book that integrates gothic elements into the storyline as a means for assessing your understanding of the gothic genre Directions: Working with a partner or small group of three students, create a 20-page children’s book that includes the following: At least 5 gothic elements An allusion to Poe’s work An allusion to The Shining Pictures on every page o (hand-drawn, computer-animated, newspaper clippings, etc.) A cover and title page Binding that is NOT merely stapled! Obviously, the children’s book you are creating will be more of an ironic children’s book because it may not be appropriate for children at all (e.g. Edward Gorey). In this way, your book may be more of a children’s book for adults, satirizing children’s literature. Explanation: To accompany your children’s book, your group must include a SEPARATE, type-written explanation of your allusions and all 5 gothic elements as they are presented in your children’s book. This explanation should be 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, double-spaced, and 1-2 pages in length. The explanation should be organized, edited, and revised—in essence, treated as a real essay. Bonus points will be given to those books that are exceptional in quality and polish and look more like professional projects, so pay careful attention to the details and to the presentation of your final product!
