CLACTON COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
Clacton County High School is a large and vibrant mixed 11-18 comprehensive with approximately
1680 students currently on roll. Around 370 of the students are in the Sixth Form and have developed a consortium arrangement with other providers in the town to ensure the widest possible range of courses are provided.
In 2003/4 the school underwent significant building and refurbishment work as part of a £6 million
PFI scheme. This led to significant improvements to the accommodation and ensured that we were fully able to cater for the large number of students on roll. New buildings included a large gym and changing rooms and a state of the art dining area.
This year saw major improvements in our examination results, particularly in Maths where 70% of students made 3 levels progress. This despite having an intake that is below average; our value added score of 1056 placed us in the top 1% of schools nationally.
The school is also the Lead School for North Essex Teacher Training (NETT). This has been in existence as a SCITT provider for the past 20 years and has been responsible for training hundreds of new entrants to the profession. This year we have been successful in significantly increasing the number of trainees we can recruit via the new School Direct route.
THE GILBERD SCHOOL
Situated on the north of Colchester, The Gilberd School has 1,350 students and 168 staff who work in a busy, cheerful community based on friendly relationships. The atmosphere is positive and full of purpose and endeavour. For us academic excellence goes hand in hand with personal development.
We believe that students learn best when they are secure and happy. We aim to give our students the skills that they will need to succeed as learners in the twenty first century, so that they become confident, competent members of the community.
Learning at The Gilberd is supported by excellent accommodation and resources. We have an exceptionally enthusiastic and committed staff who do all they can to ensure high quality learning and teaching takes place. The school enjoys outstanding community support from our parents, governors and local businesses.
HARWICH & DOVERCOURT SCHOOL
Harwich and Dovercourt High School is an 11-18 mixed comprehensive school with 1200 students, servicing the area of Harwich and its surrounding villages. The school has strong links with the community, being the only secondary school in the town. It occupies a large, open site, surrounded by its own playing field and sea views. In March 2012 the school converted to Academy status along with 6 other local secondary schools, creating the first Academy Partnership Trust. This partnership provides for excellent shared development across the schools.
The school has embarked upon a period of major development, including a change in specialism to
Humanities, development of vocational courses, radical expansion of ICT provision, the opening of a community drop in centre and a £750,000 new dining facility.
At Harwich and Dovercourt High School we have high expectations and aspirations for our students. There is a purposeful and hardworking ethos amongst both staff and students. Over the last 4 years results have increased significantly from 38% 5 A*-C pass rate in 2008 at GCSE to 78% in
2012. Our 5 A*-C pass rate including English and Maths has increased year on year, placing the school in the top 4% most improved schools in the country.

MANNINGTREE HIGH SCHOOL
Manningtree High School is a special place with a welcoming atmosphere and a friendly feel. We believe that children achieve their best when they are happy, safe and well known by their teachers and the other adults who work at the school. 850 students from 11-16 means that Manningtree High
School is smaller than most other secondary schools, we are very well placed to know the students and how to help them achieve their best.
We recently gained Academy Status and are part of the North East Essex Education Partnership with six other local schools.
Students make good progress at Manningtree. Our success in external examinations is something we are very proud of. In January 2010 we were especially praised for our outstanding care, guidance and support by Ofsted who also said "students are particularly successful at GCSE".
One of our most recent external recognitions has been for our international work. We have links with schools in China, The Gambia and Namibia with further work planned.
ST HELENA SCHOOL
St Helena School is a lively, friendly and welcoming 11-16 school with 930 students currently on roll.
Our specialism of Media Arts has seen significant investment in media and ICT facilities, including a
TV/Photography studio and editing suite.
Alongside their academic studies, students at St Helena can follow programmes which offer unrivalled opportunities to develop skills in areas not traditionally offered until post-16. Our innovative curriculum and the quality of care, guidance and support were judged to be good at the time of our last full inspection in May 2010.
Learning is at the heart of all that we do. Our aim is to ensure that every student leaves school with the skills, qualifications and attributes necessary to be a confident, successful and fulfilled young adult. Our students say that they enjoy learning here; our teachers work hard, have excellent subject knowledge and take pride in developing lessons which engage students and inspire them to achieve.
The school has been on a long journey of improvement over a period of time which has seen the percentage of students achieving 5 or more A*-C grades increase from 41% to 78%. However, we recognise that this journey is far from over as we strive to ensure that every student makes the best possible progress during their time at St Helena.
THE STANWAY FEDERATION ACADEMY TRUST
On 2 nd November 2009 the Stanway and Thomas Lord Audley Schools formed a hard federation with one governing body and on conversion in March 2012 we became a multi academy trust.
The Stanway School
The Stanway School is a heavily over-subscribed 11-16 comprehensive school with 1120 students, the vast majority of whom live in Stanway and the surrounding villages to the west of Colchester.
We are the lead school for the Colchester Teacher Training Consortium, which has been in existence for the last 10 years. Every year this enables us to appoint high quality, newly qualified teachers from our own pool of expertise.
This school is now in its eighth year as a specialist school in Humanities and the headline figure of 5
A*-C with English & Maths increased significantly during that period. During this period we also undertook a £14M rebuilding programme. In April 2009 we were awarded a second specialism for
Page 3 of 4
Maths & Computing. The 2012 English results were significantly affected by the well-publicised grade boundary change fiasco; the effect of which we are confident will not be an issue in this summer’s exams when we expect the figure to return to 70%+.
Thomas Lord Audley School
The Thomas Lord Audley School is an 11-16 comprehensive school with just over 700 students
(capacity of 840), which serves a diverse catchment area including Old Heath, Monkwick, Shrub End and the villages to the south of Colchester, including the community of Mersea Island.
The school was placed in special measures by Ofsted in November 2005 and finally moved out of that category in October 2008. Since then the percentage rates in 5 A*-C and the 5 A*-C with
English & Maths have both doubled. We are also pleased that even in a significant falling roll situation, the number of first choices has continued to increase year on year as the local community regains confidence in the school.
The school has benefited from the Federation/Trust’s programme of seconding high quality staff between the two schools (which has had a particular impact at Thomas Lord Audley) and also the development of wide-ranging in-service training which has led to ongoing school improvement.
